Chapter 6

An Unexpected Reaction

The sun had already kissed the horizon goodbye when Russel, exhausted from a day of mercenary tasks, decided to seek solace at his favorite hilltop. This place was special; it was where his mother had often taken him when he was younger. They would gaze at the stars together, dreaming of the days when their family name would regain its former glory.

Today, however, there was no dreaming. Only a heavy heart and a weariness in his bones that no amount of rest could alleviate. As he looked at the ring - the Dragon’s Heart - memories of his mother flooded him. He thought of her tales, of powerful ancestors who commanded the respect of the entire realm.

Rubbing the ring absentmindedly, he felt a strange warmth emanate from it. Curious, he held the ring up to the moonlight, observing the intricate patterns and the mesmerizing jewel at its center. The jewel, usually a deep shade of crimson, now pulsated with a vibrant glow. Surprised, Russel tried to pull his gaze away, but found himself ensnared by the jewel’s shimmer.

Suddenly, a rush of images and sensations flooded his mind. He saw snippets of his recent past, the disdainful looks from his peers, the disappointment in his own eyes when he was expelled, and the harsh realities of his mercenary life. Then, inexplicably, the scenes began to rewind, racing backward through his days at the academy, his childhood, and even before that.

Panicking, Russel tried to remove the ring, but it seemed to have fused with his skin. The wind around him picked up, howling like a trapped animal. The ground beneath seemed to sway and shimmer, and for a moment, the world turned upside down.

Suddenly, everything went still.

Blinking in confusion, Russel found himself in a familiar setting. The Academy’s grand hall loomed before him, its spires reaching for the sky. Students in mage robes hustled about, their laughter and chatter filling the air. The scene was so real, so vivid. But wasn't this a thing of his past? Remember when he was forcibly removed?

He looked down at himself. Gone were the rough mercenary clothes. Instead, he was adorned in the familiar mage student attire. The Dragon’s Heart still adorned his finger, but now it rested quietly, its glow subdued.

A sudden realization hit him. The ring hadn’t just shown him the past; it had taken him there.

Before he could gather his thoughts, a familiar voice called out. "Russel! There you are! We've been searching for you. You're late for Master Eldric's class." It was Aria, looking just as he remembered her, her eyes filled with concern and a hint of playfulness. The past, it seemed, was all too real.

Pushing down his surprise, Russel nodded. "Sorry, I got lost in thought," he replied, struggling to keep his voice steady.

Aria chuckled, "Always the dreamer. Come on, before the old man docks points from our house!"

As they walked, Russel took in his surroundings. Everything was as he remembered. But now, he had a crucial advantage - the memories of the future. He could rectify his mistakes, rebuild the Raymond name, and maybe, just maybe, uncover the mysteries of the Dragon’s Heart.

His expulsion and subsequent hardships felt like a bad dream. And while the joy of being back at the Academy was palpable, the weight of his 'future' experiences wasn’t lost on him. It was a heavy mantle to bear, but it came with the promise of a second chance.

As he settled into the familiar classroom, he took a deep breath. The challenges ahead were numerous. But for now, the young mage was armed with something even more potent than magic – the gift of foresight.

And as Master Eldric began his lecture, Russel listened with renewed vigor, determined to make the most of his unexpected return to the past. The Dragon's Heart had given him a rare opportunity, and he would not squander it.
