Chapter 7

Return to the Past

Sunlight pierced through the ornate windows of the mage academy, illuminating a young Russel Raymond who found himself surrounded by familiar faces, all of whom appeared younger and more carefree. The weight of the Dragon’s Heart ring pressed against his chest, a testament to the unreality he was currently experiencing.

As students bustled about, the chatter of familiar voices filled the air. Aria, a young mage with fiery red hair, approached Russel, waving her hand animatedly. "Russel! Why the brooding look? We're about to start the Rune Crafting class!"

Russel blinked, processing his surroundings. The last thing he remembered was the weight of the world, being scorned and living the life of a mercenary. Yet, here he was, back at the academy, seemingly returned to a past long gone.

He replied, trying to hide his astonishment, "Just lost in thought, Aria. Let's head to class."

Walking alongside Aria brought back a torrent of memories, the innocent days before the politics and vendettas. How could he explain to her, or anyone for that matter, that he had lived through all of this before?

Arriving in the Rune Crafting room, Russel took a seat at the familiar wooden desk. Professor Dornan, with his greying beard and robes, started the lecture on fundamental rune combinations. It was rudimentary knowledge for Russel, given his past (or future) experiences. However, he paid keen attention, hoping to catch something he might've missed the first time.

As the class progressed, a mischievous grin formed on Jasper's face. He whispered a spell, sending a small fireball towards Russel. Reacting instinctively with his enhanced knowledge and skills, Russel deflected the fireball, making it dance around the room before harmlessly dissipating. The classroom fell into a stunned silence.

Dornan, raising an eyebrow, commented, "Impressive reflexes, Mr. Raymond. I hope to see such prowess in your rune crafting as well."

Russel nodded, locking eyes with Jasper, who looked both surprised and somewhat impressed. "Thank you, Professor. I've been... practicing."

After class, as students filed out, Aria sidled up to Russel. "That was incredible! When did you get so good?"

He sighed. "I've had some... unique experiences, Aria."

She furrowed her brow, sensing that there was something Russel wasn't sharing. But before she could press further, Master Eldric, the stern headmaster, approached.

"Raymond," he began with his usual austere tone, "a word in my office, if you please."

Dread filled Russel as he followed Eldric. The office was just as he remembered—lined with ancient books and artifacts of immense power. Eldric motioned for Russel to sit. "Your sudden improvement in skills is... curious. Care to explain?"

Russel hesitated for a moment, then decided to be forthright. "Sir, something inexplicable has happened. The Dragon’s Heart ring—it has given me a second chance at my academy days. I've lived through this time once already."

Eldric leaned back, intrigued. "Time manipulation is a complex and dangerous magic. The Dragon’s Heart is a powerful artifact, but this is beyond anything I've heard of it doing. If what you're saying is true, then we must tread cautiously."

"I don't fully understand it myself," Russel admitted. "But I want to make things right this time around."

Master Eldric eyed him critically. "Your intentions may be noble, but remember, playing with time can have unforeseen consequences. You must be careful with every action, every spell."

Russel nodded, determination clear in his eyes. "I understand, Master Eldric. I won't let the Raymond name be tarnished again."

As Russel exited the office, the weight of responsibility pressed on him. He had a unique opportunity to rewrite his past and reclaim his family's honor. But with that came the challenge of navigating a world where he knew of impending betrayals and heartbreaks.

Rejoining Aria, she looked at him expectantly. "Well? What did he say?"

Russel smiled weakly. "Just some advice on handling newfound abilities. It seems I have a lot to prove, and even more to learn."

Little did they know, this was just the beginning of Russel’s journey to ascendancy, a path that would see him face challenges and adversities he had never imagined. The second chance given by the Dragon’s Heart was a gift, but it was also a test of his strength, resilience, and the depth of his character.
