Chapter 13

Unraveling the Dragon's Heart

The tournament grounds buzzed with energy, anticipation palpable in the air. Russel, now the talk of the Academy, stood face to face with Cedric, the reigning champion mage, a figure both feared and revered.

Cedric, tall and imperious with silver streaks in his dark hair, fixed Russel with an icy stare. “A Raymond, at this stage? Unimaginable,” he sneered, recalling the family’s tarnished reputation. “I hope you won’t disgrace the finale with mere parlor tricks.”

Russel’s hand instinctively went to the Dragon’s Heart ring. “Trust me, Cedric,” he replied calmly, “I intend to put up a show you won't forget.”

As the bell tolled, marking the commencement of the final round, the entire Academy watched in anticipation.

Cedric was first to strike, drawing from his reservoir of elemental magic. The ground trembled, and pillars of earth rose, attempting to entrap Russel. Yet, with the agility bestowed by his Dragon’s Wing Spell, Russel danced through the air, evading capture.

Not to be outdone, Russel summoned a vortex of wind, aiming to unbalance Cedric. The champion mage responded by conjuring a barrier of flames, neutralizing the gusts.

Their dual continued, an orchestration of magic that left spectators breathless. Spells of light clashed with shadows, water streams battled blazing meteors, and the very fabric of reality seemed to warp and bend around the two combatants.

As minutes turned to hours, the battle showed no sign of waning. But the prolonged duel was taking its toll, evident in the sweat on Russel’s brow and Cedric’s labored breathing.

Seizing a momentary lapse in Cedric’s defense, Russel whispered an incantation, drawing power from the mana stone and his ring. With a thrust of his hand, a blinding light enveloped the arena. When it dissipated, an ethereal dragon, formed of pure mana, hovered above Russel.

The audience gasped. Never before had they witnessed a spell of such magnitude.

Cedric, however, remained undeterred. Drawing upon his years of experience, he conjured a phoenix, its fiery wings spanning the breadth of the arena. Both creatures clashed, the sky echoing with their roars.

With both mages deeply connected to their summoned creatures, each blow to the dragon or phoenix reverberated back to its conjurer. Cedric’s phoenix scorched Russel’s dragon, causing Russel to grimace in pain. In retaliation, the dragon's ethereal claws raked across the phoenix, eliciting a cry from Cedric.

Realizing that the battle of beasts might not end in his favor, Russel played his trump card. Using the Dragon’s Heart, he channeled the ancient power of his lineage. The ring glowed fiercely, and Russel's eyes mirrored its intensity.

Murmurs spread through the crowd. Memories of legends whispered in the dark corners of the Academy came to the fore. The ancient Dragon-Devouring Spell was said to be a myth, yet here it was, about to be unleashed.

Russel’s voice echoed with power as he chanted the spell. Cedric’s phoenix, sensing imminent danger, tried to retaliate, but it was too late. The dragon, now a whirlwind of energy, enveloped the fiery bird, extinguishing its flames and absorbing its essence.

With the phoenix defeated, Cedric fell to his knees, drained and defeated.

The arena erupted in cheers. “Dragon Mage! Dragon Mage!” they chanted, the title resounding with reverence and awe. Russel, the boy who had once been ridiculed and expelled, had now ascended to legendary status.

Master Eldric, the stern headmaster, approached the center of the arena, admiration evident in his eyes. “Today,” he declared, “we’ve witnessed the birth of a new legend. Russel Raymond, the Dragon Mage!”

As the celebrations ensued, Russel caught Aria’s eye from across the arena. Her smile, radiant with pride and affection, conveyed more than words ever could. The legacy of the Raymond family was not just restored but elevated to heights hitherto unimaginable.

But amidst the jubilation, Elara, the cunning mage, watched from the shadows, her eyes fixed on the Dragon’s Heart ring. The rise of the Dragon Mage, she knew, was just the beginning of a larger, more intricate game.
