Chapter 22

The Second Round's Challenge

The Academy's grand arena pulsated with energy. Chants from the audience echoed through the air, reverberating with the weight of tradition and expectation. It was the second round of the Mage Tournament, and Russel stood at the center of it all, his presence commanding attention.

As Russel prepared for his next match, he could feel the weight of every gaze upon him. Rumors about his unprecedented growth in magic had spread like wildfire. There were whispers, some of admiration, others of disbelief. But today, he had another opportunity to validate his newfound prowess.

His opponent was a formidable mage named Keldan. Unlike many, Keldan didn't hail from a lineage of magic. His power was self-made, born from hard work and determination, earning him respect among peers. Russel had always admired Keldan, but today they were rivals, and only one could advance.

The arena's boundary shimmered as a protective barrier arose, separating the combatants from the audience. As the countdown began, both mages began channeling their mana, their auras flaring brightly. The anticipation was palpable.

When the gong resounded, Keldan wasted no time. With a swift incantation, he unleashed a barrage of fireballs, illuminating the arena. Russel, reacting quickly, summoned a water barrier, dousing the flames. Steam hissed around them, creating a temporary mist.

Using this to his advantage, Russel whispered an incantation, and the Dragon’s Wing Spell unfurled from his hands, casting a shadow over the arena. He took to the skies, the dragon wings lifting him above the mist, where he could strategize his next move.

But Keldan was prepared. Drawing from the earth element, stone pillars erupted around him, reaching skyward. One of them approached Russel at a blinding speed. Russel narrowly dodged, but it was evident that Keldan wasn't going to be easily outmatched.

From above, Russel spotted an opening. Concentrating his energy, he combined wind and water elements, creating a vortex of icy shards. Directing it towards Keldan, he hoped to restrict his opponent's movements.

Keldan countered with a heatwave, melting most of the shards. Yet, some found their mark, causing minor cuts. The pain, however, only seemed to energize Keldan. His eyes glowed with renewed determination.

Closing the distance, Keldan switched tactics, opting for close combat. His staff transformed into a blade of pure energy. Russel responded, manifesting a shield imbued with dragon essence. The ensuing clash was intense, each move calculated, each blow countered.

The crowd was enthralled, their cheers a blend of excitement and awe. The duel between Russel and Keldan was proving to be one of the tournament’s most captivating matches.

As minutes ticked by, it was clear that stamina would play a crucial role. Keldan, though powerful, was showing signs of fatigue. Russel, with the Dragon's Heart ring, had an edge. Its energy pulsed with his heartbeat, ensuring his mana reservoir remained stable.

Seizing an opening, Russel unleashed a bolt of lightning, aimed directly at Keldan. Keldan, in a desperate move, conjured a mirror shield, reflecting the bolt. Russel, however, had anticipated this. Muttering an incantation, he altered the lightning's trajectory mid-air, guiding it around the mirror and striking Keldan from behind.

The impact sent Keldan sprawling, his energy shield flickering. But before Russel could land the decisive blow, Keldan, drawing from his last reserves, trapped Russel in a gravitational field, rendering him immobile.

Both mages were at their limits, their breathing labored, their energies waning. The audience was on the edge of their seats, unsure of the outcome.

In this moment of stasis, Russel whispered words known to few. Drawing from the Dragon's Heart, he summoned a surge of power that shattered the gravitational field. As he broke free, he extended a hand towards Keldan, halting the fight.

The arena fell silent.

"I yield," Keldan gasped, acknowledging Russel's might.

Russel nodded, offering Keldan a hand up. "It was an honor," he replied, their rivalry transforming into mutual respect.

The crowd erupted in applause. Russel's victory wasn't just a personal achievement; it was a testament to his growth, determination, and the mysterious power of the Dragon’s Heart.
