Chapter 23

Russel vs. The Top Mage

The vast, crystalline arena of the Mage Tournament shimmered under the intense glow of the realm's twin suns. Spectators, who had eagerly anticipated this showdown, packed the coliseum to its brim. There was a hum of palpable tension, a chorus of whispered speculations, all waiting for the battle of the titans.

Across the arena stood Russel, the newly christened "Dragon Mage." His azure robes, reflecting his newfound affinity with the Dragon’s Heart, fluttered in the gusty arena winds. Opposite him stood the reigning champion, Magnus, a mage of great renown, draped in crimson, symbolizing his fiery command over magic.

"Ready yourself, Russel," Magnus intoned, his voice echoing. "You may have bested others, but today you face the Academy's finest."

Russel smiled, confidence brimming. "I'm ready to see if the title 'Top Mage' is deserved, Magnus."

As the starting gong resounded, Magnus wasted no time. His fingers danced with finesse, conjuring a wall of fire, trying to encircle and trap Russel. The flames roared, their heat almost tangible even from the spectator stands.

But Russel, drawing from his memories and newfound abilities, cast the Dragon's Wing Spell. A gust of wind, shaped like dragon wings, burst from his palms, parting the fiery waves. The flames dispersed, leaving the arena unscathed.

The audience gasped. No one had successfully countered Magnus's fire spell so effortlessly before.

"Interesting," Magnus said, a hint of admiration sneaking into his tone. "But can you handle this?" With a rapid incantation, chains forged from pure energy erupted from the ground, seeking to bind Russel.

Instead of deflecting them, Russel allowed the chains to approach. Just as they were about to wrap around him, he channeled the energy of the Dragon’s Heart ring. The chains, instead of binding him, absorbed into his being, enhancing his magical aura.

Russel, using this boost, retaliated. His hands sculpted the air, manifesting ethereal dragons that soared towards Magnus. Each dragon represented a branch of magic, a challenge for Magnus to counter them all simultaneously.

Magnus, visibly strained, defended fiercely. He summoned a protective barrier, which the dragons assailed relentlessly. The shield wavered with every blow but held strong.

The two mages locked eyes, acknowledging each other’s prowess.

Aria, watching intently from the stands, whispered to Master Eldric beside her, "Russel's not just fighting to win; he's sending a message."

Eldric nodded, eyes never leaving the duel. "He's showing that the Raymond legacy is not a fluke. That he's worthy of respect."

The battle raged on, with both mages showcasing their strongest spells. The arena transformed, reflecting their magical might. From a fiery inferno to a frozen tundra, from a stormy tempest to an enchanted forest, the surroundings shifted, leaving the audience in awe.

As the duel neared its climax, Magnus, showing signs of exhaustion, played his trump card. He summoned a massive phoenix, its flames so bright that spectators had to shield their eyes. The bird, with a deafening screech, dove straight for Russel.

Russel, centering himself, tapped deep into the Dragon’s Heart ring. The ring glowed fiercely, matching the brightness of the oncoming phoenix. Drawing upon its power, Russel conjured a majestic, ethereal dragon, mirroring the phoenix's size and intensity.

The two colossal beings clashed mid-air, resulting in a blinding explosion. Magical shockwaves rippled across the arena, pushing back everyone, including the battling mages.

As the dust settled and vision returned, the audience saw the two mages, panting and exhausted, at opposite ends of the arena. But it was clear who stood tall. Russel, with his unyielding determination, still had a spark left, while Magnus, drained, collapsed to his knees.

The referee, after ensuring Magnus was unharmed, declared, "Winner of the duel: Russel Raymond, the Dragon Mage!"

The coliseum erupted into deafening cheers. Russel's victory was not just personal; it was a win for the tarnished Raymond name, a message to all that the legacy was reborn.

Magnus, gathering his strength, approached Russel. Extending his hand, he said, "Well fought, Russel. Today, you've shown us all the power and honor of the Dragon Mage."

Russel, shaking Magnus's hand firmly, replied, "Thank you, Magnus. Today, we both fought for more than just a title."

As the two mages exited the arena, the realms knew that a new legend had risen. The era of the Dragon Mage had truly begun.
