A Changed World
The Academy’s once-familiar cobblestone streets felt different beneath Russel’s boots. Though it had been mere months since he ventured into the Forbidden Forest, it felt like years had passed in this world.
“A lot has changed in your absence, Russel,” Aria said, walking alongside him. Her eyes hinted at a weariness that was absent before. The campus, usually bustling with eager young mages, was eerily subdued.
“What happened?” Russel asked.
Aria glanced around and lowered her voice. “After you left, factions formed within the Academy. Some, like us, wanted to tap into ancient magics and secrets. Others, well, they feared the power and wanted to suppress it.”
Russel looked at the academy's main building. Instead of the vibrant banners that once hung with pride, he now saw barriers, protection charms, and patrol mages at every corner. “Is the Academy under threat?”
Aria hesitated. “Yes, and not just from outside. There have been... incidents. Attacks on professors, thefts of ancient tomes, and dark magic rituals performed in secret. It’s not just about learning magic anymore; it's about wielding power and influence.”
As they neared the central courtyard, Russel noticed a group of students in heated debate. Among them stood Jasper, his former rival, hands animated as he made a passionate point.
Spotting Russel, Jasper's expression went from agitation to surprise. The crowd turned, and a hush fell upon them. “Russel Raymond,” Jasper greeted, his tone neutral but eyes wary.
“Jasper,” Russel nodded. “Seems I missed a lot.”
Jasper sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Indeed. And your little trip into the Forbidden Forest hasn’t helped your reputation. There are rumors about your newfound powers.”
Russel frowned, catching whispers from the surrounding students – “Dragon Mage”, “Too powerful”, “Is he a threat?”.
“Rumors will always circulate. I went in search of knowledge and understanding, nothing more,” Russel said, but he knew his words fell on some deaf ears.
Jasper looked around. “It’s not just you, Russel. Ever since your... venture, others have tried to follow in your footsteps. Some have returned with powers they can't control. Others...” He paused, not meeting Russel's eyes. “Others haven't returned at all.”
The weight of that revelation hit Russel. His journey had not just changed him; it had changed the Academy's entire dynamic.
As they continued their walk, Russel saw more signs of change. The once open Magical Creatures department was sealed, with only certain mages allowed entry. The Library of Arcane, which Russel frequented in his early days, was heavily guarded.
“What’s happened to Master Eldric?” Russel inquired. The stern headmaster, for all his reservations about Russel, had always been a pillar of strength and guidance for the Academy.
Aria hesitated, sharing a glance with Jasper. “He’s... secluded himself. Ever since the disturbances began, he’s been trying to find solutions. But it seems every day there’s a new challenge.”
The trio stopped in front of the grand hall, its massive doors shut tight. “This is where the Mage Council meets now,” Jasper explained. “They’re trying to keep order, but the divide is evident. Some believe in embracing the new magics, while others think it’s a path to chaos.”
Russel looked between his two friends, understanding the weight they’d been carrying in his absence. “I need to speak with them.”
Jasper sighed. “Good luck. They’re not particularly fond of outsiders, especially those with rumored ties to dragons.”
But Russel was undeterred. The Academy was his home. It had given him knowledge, friends, purpose. He wouldn’t stand by and watch it crumble. The Dragon’s Heart ring on his finger seemed to pulse in agreement.
“I’ll do what I must,” Russel said with determination. “We all will.”
Aria and Jasper exchanged glances. The world had changed, and dangers lurked in every shadow. But with Russel back, there was hope. A hope that the Academy, for all its divisions and challenges, could once again stand united.
As Russel approached the grand hall, ready to face the Mage Council, he knew one thing – his journey was far from over. And he was ready for whatever challenges lay ahead.
