Chapter 51

Dragons Descend

The clamor of battle surrounded the Academy, with every stone echoing the cries of fallen mages and warriors. The once-pristine halls were now littered with debris, the scent of charred magic heavy in the air. As Russel and his allies valiantly fought, there was a growing sense of despair among the defenders. The numbers of the enemy seemed endless, and even the combined might of the Academy's best couldn’t turn the tide.

Amidst the conflict, Russel felt an immense pressure weighing down on him. Every fallen ally, every scream of pain, bore heavily on his conscience. It was then, in his moment of deepest despair, that he felt it: a pulsing, resonating connection emanating from the Dragon's Heart ring on his finger.

Without thinking, Russel raised his hand skyward, focusing all his energy into the ring. An ethereal sound, like a melodious chant, spread from the depths of the Academy to the far reaches of the Forbidden Forest. The wind carried the sound, and for a brief moment, the cacophony of battle was drowned out by its haunting beauty.

From the east, dark shapes began to form against the crimson sky. At first, they looked like mere specks, but as they drew closer, their grandeur became evident. Massive dragons, with scales reflecting the dying sunlight, swooped down, causing the very ground to tremble beneath their might.

Eyes, as old as the realm itself, scanned the battlefield. Sylas, the dragon Russel had once confronted and later befriended, led the majestic creatures. His sapphire-blue scales glistened as he roared, challenging any enemy that dared to face this newfound force.

With the dragons' entrance, hope was rekindled among the Academy's defenders. Their morale surged as fire and ice, along with other magical elements, rained down upon the invaders. The dragons, each a force of nature in its own right, devastated the enemy ranks with every sweep of their claws and every gust of their mighty wings.

Aria, who was holding a defensive line near the main courtyard, looked up in awe. She whispered, almost to herself, "The legends were true. The Dragon Mage can summon them..."

Jasper, who had been fighting valiantly beside her, grinned, his face smeared with soot and sweat. "That he can, and it looks like we've got the upper hand now."

However, the invaders weren’t to be underestimated. Dark mages among their ranks began channeling their energies, creating formidable barriers and summoning creatures of shadow to counter the dragons. The sky became a dance of light and darkness, with powerful spells clashing and energies intertwining.

Lord Vardan, seeing the sudden shift in the tide, summoned a dark cloud, aiming to engulf the dragons and drain their energy. Russel, riding on Sylas’s back, could sense the malicious intent. He channeled his power through the Dragon's Heart, strengthening each dragon and breaking Vardan's dark enchantments.

The battle in the sky was mirrored on the ground. Every mage, inspired by the dragons’ might, fought with renewed vigor. The Academy's walls, which had once seemed on the verge of breach, now stood strong, a beacon of hope and resistance.

As the sun set, the horizon painted a picture of magic's raw power. For every dragon that took to the sky, there were dozens of mages on the ground, their spells and incantations combining to form an impenetrable defense.

However, even as the dragons tilted the balance in favor of the Academy, Russel knew that this was just the beginning. The true power of the enemy was yet to be revealed, and he needed to be prepared for what was to come.

Sylas, sensing Russel's thoughts, communicated through an ancient bond they shared, "Fear not, Dragon Mage. Today, we stand by you, and we shall not let this realm fall."

Russel nodded, determination filling his eyes. The Dragon’s Heart had once again shown its power, but the journey was far from over. The battle for the Academy, and for the realm, had only just begun.
