Farewell for Now
Lydia sat quietly on the edge of the school courtyard, her fingers nervously twisting the hem of her sweater as the late afternoon sun cast a warm, amber glow over everything. The gentle hum of laughter and chatter from students drifting through the air felt distant, almost muted compared to the pounding of her own heart. She had been waiting here for a while, her thoughts swirling in a storm of hope and anxiety. Today was the day she had resolved to finally speak her truth, to let her feelings surface after months of silent admiration.
Across the courtyard, Zayne approached, his usual confident stride softened by a hint of hesitation. His eyes found Lydia immediately, and a faint smile touched his lips. It was a smile that carried unspoken words, a mixture of affection, uncertainty, and a desire to bridge the unspoken gap that had grown between them. His hands tucked into his pockets as he stopped a few paces away, unsure of how to begin.
Lydia looked up, her cheeks flushing slightly. She felt a flutter in her chest—nerves, yes, but also a strange sense of liberation. Today, she thought, I will be brave. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself.
“Hey,” Zayne finally said, his voice gentle but tinged with hesitance. “I’ve been meaning to talk to you.”
Lydia nodded, her eyes fixed on her trembling hands. “Me too,” she whispered, voice barely audible.
Zayne hesitated, then stepped closer, lowering his voice as if afraid others might overhear. “I’ve noticed how you always listen so carefully during class, how you’re always there with a kind word or a small smile. It’s… it’s been on my mind lately. I guess I just wanted to say that I see you, Lydia. Really see you.”
She looked up then, surprise flickering across her face before giving way to a shy smile. “I’ve admired you too, Zayne. From afar, I guess. I didn’t think I’d have the courage to say anything.”
He chuckled softly, a nervous edge to his expression. “Honestly, I’ve been pretty nervous myself. I’ve always wondered if I was just imagining things, if you even noticed me beyond the casual glances.”
Lydia’s heart pounded louder at his words. Her voice trembled as she responded, “I’ve always noticed how kind you are. How you make everyone feel like they matter. I’ve wanted to tell you how much that means to me, but I was afraid of what might happen if I did.”
Zayne took a step closer, his gaze unwavering. “I guess we’re both a little scared. But I don’t want to let that fear stop us from being honest. I’ve liked you for a while now, Lydia. More than just as a friend. I think I’ve fallen for your quiet strength, your gentle heart.”
A blush spread across Lydia’s cheeks, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. She felt a warmth blooming inside her, a mixture of relief and happiness that threatened to overflow. Her voice caught in her throat for a moment, but she gathered her courage and managed to say, “I’ve wanted to hear you say that. I’ve been afraid to hope, but I’ve felt the same way. I’ve been afraid to say it out loud, because I didn’t want to ruin what we have.”
Zayne reached out, his hand hesitating for a moment before gently taking hers in his. His touch was tentative but sincere. “Maybe we’ve both been waiting for the right moment. Or maybe we just needed to be brave enough to take it.”
Lydia squeezed his hand softly, her eyes shining with newfound confidence. “I don’t want to hide anymore. I want to see where this could go, if you’re willing.”
He nodded, a genuine smile spreading across his face. “I am. I want to find out, together.”
They stood there for a moment, the world around them fading into insignificance. The sun dipped lower, casting long shadows but also illuminating the promise of something new and fragile. Lydia felt a gentle warmth settle in her chest, the kind that only comes when you finally step out of the shadows of doubt and into the light of possibility.
As they turned to walk side by side toward the school gates, Lydia’s mind was already racing with dreams of what could be. She knew there would be challenges, moments of uncertainty and fear, but for now, she allowed herself to believe in this moment—the truth she had finally spoken, the love she had dared to admit. The future stretched before them, uncertain but full of hope, and for the first time in a long while, Lydia felt ready to embrace it wholeheartedly.
