Chapter 1

A Late Morning Collision

Lemon’s cheerful voice echoed through the bustling hallways of Maplewood High, her bright smile lighting up even the dullest corners. Clad in her favorite strawberry-themed accessories—an adorable pin on her bag and a bracelet she made herself—she weaved effortlessly through clusters of students, her energy infectious. Today was no different; she was determined to start the day with the same enthusiasm that fueled her every morning.

As she approached her classroom, she spotted Mrs. Carter, her homeroom teacher, organizing papers on her desk. Mrs. Carter looked up and offered a warm smile. “Good morning, Lemon! Ready for another exciting day?”

Lemon beamed. “Absolutely! I’ve got my lucky strawberry pen, so everything’s bound to go perfectly!”

Mrs. Carter chuckled softly. “That’s the spirit. Just remember to be yourself, and everything will fall into place.”

Lemon nodded eagerly and pushed open the door to her classroom. The room was filled with the quiet hum of students settling into their seats. Among them was Lucien, sitting alone at his desk, his dark eyes fixed on a textbook he was barely glancing at. His posture was impeccable, but there was a distant, almost cold aura about him that contrasted sharply with Lemon’s vibrant energy.

She approached her seat with a bright grin. “Good morning, Lucien!”

He looked up, eyes narrowing slightly. “Morning,” he replied tersely, then returned to his book.

Lemon hesitated for a moment, then plopped down beside him. “You know, I was thinking about the science project. Maybe we could team up? I’ve got some really cool ideas about making a volcano erupt—like, with real fizz and everything!”

Lucien’s gaze flicked to her, a flicker of surprise crossing his face before he masked it with his usual composed expression. “I prefer to work alone,” he said simply.

Lemon’s smile faltered just a little, but she quickly recovered. “Oh, okay! I understand. But if you ever want to collaborate, just let me know. I think we’d make a great team!”

He nodded subtly, returning his attention to the pages before him. Lemon’s heart fluttered with a mix of hope and curiosity. She had heard from Mia and Ethan that Lucien was the kind of person who kept everyone at arm’s length, but she was determined to see beyond that icy exterior. After all, everyone had a warm heart somewhere beneath their walls.

Mrs. Carter called the class to order, and the lesson began. Lemon listened intently, her mind swirling with ideas and her usual enthusiasm bubbling beneath the surface. She loved school, not just for the lessons, but for the chance to connect with others, to sprinkle a little sunshine into their lives.

During the break, Lemon headed outside to the courtyard, where Mia was waiting with a bright smile and a bag of strawberries she had brought for their snack. As Lemon approached, Mia grinned mischievously.

“Bet you five bucks Lucien’s still being a grump,” Mia teased.

Lemon rolled her eyes playfully. “Oh, come on. He’s not that bad. Just a little reserved.”

Mia giggled. “Well, maybe. But I think underneath that serious face, he’s just waiting for someone to crack him open.”

Lemon blushed slightly at her friend's words but shrugged. “Maybe. I’ll find a way to get through that ice. You’ll see.”

They sat together on the bench, nibbling on strawberries and chatting about their plans for the upcoming school festival. Lemon’s bright personality was contagious, and Mia’s supportive presence made her feel more confident about her feelings and ambitions.

Meanwhile, in a quiet corner of the school grounds, Lucien sat beneath a tree, lost in thought. His mind kept drifting back to Lemon’s cheerful face, her unwavering optimism that seemed to shine through her every word and gesture. He rarely allowed himself to indulge in such distractions, but Lemon’s energy was undeniably magnetic.

Across the campus, Ethan approached with a grin. “Hey, Lucien. You’ve been staring into space all morning. Everything okay?”

Lucien looked up, a faint smirk playing on his lips. “Fine. Just thinking.”

Ethan plopped down beside him. “Thinking about Lemon, maybe?”

Lucien’s eyes flickered, and he looked away. “What makes you say that?”

Ethan chuckled. “Come on, man. It’s obvious. She’s always trying to get you to smile or talk more. It’s like she’s got this mission to crack your fortress.”

Lucien’s expression remained unreadable. “She’s persistent.”

Ethan leaned back against the tree trunk. “That’s Lemon for you. She believes everyone has a good side. Maybe you’re just too caught up in your studies to notice.”

Lucien’s gaze lingered on the distant horizon, his mind swirling with unfamiliar feelings. He had always been the top of the class, the guy who kept his emotions tightly sealed. But Lemon’s genuine kindness was slowly starting to chip away at the icy wall he’d built around himself.

Later that afternoon, Lemon found herself sitting in the school library, flipping through a book on love stories for her creative writing class. She loved reading about different kinds of love—romantic, platonic, even unspoken affection. It made her wonder if love was just about daring to be brave enough to show who you really are.

Mrs. Carter approached her quietly. “Lemon, I see you’re deep in thought. Anything I can help with?”

Lemon looked up and smiled shyly. “I’m just thinking about how love is like a story. Sometimes you have to take a risk to see how it ends.”

Mrs. Carter nodded wisely. “That’s true. Love often begins with a small step, like a smile or a kind word. Just be yourself, Lemon. That’s the best way to find out where your story will go.”

Lemon’s cheeks warmed at her words. She felt a renewed sense of courage. Maybe, just maybe, her bright, unwavering heart could reach Lucien someday.

As the sun dipped lower, casting a golden glow over the school grounds, Lemon packed her bag with a newfound resolve. Love was a story waiting to unfold, and she was determined to write her own chapter, no matter how icy the beginning might be. With her heart full of hope, she headed home, the sweet scent of strawberries lingering in her mind, ready for whatever tomorrow would bring.
