Chapter 10

The School Gates Reminder

Lemon’s heart fluttered as she hurried through the school corridors, clutching her notebook tightly. The sun poured through the large windows, casting warm patterns on the polished floors, but her mind was elsewhere—lost in thoughts about Lucien. She could still feel the lingering warmth from their quiet conversation the day before, a rare moment where he had lowered his guard, revealing a hint of vulnerability beneath his icy exterior. She knew she was taking a risk, but her feelings refused to be silenced.

Mrs. Carter’s gentle voice echoed in her mind, reminding her to stay true to herself. Lemon took a deep breath, smoothing her skirt as she reached the classroom door. Inside, her friends Mia and Ethan were already seated, chatting softly about the upcoming school festival. Lemon tried to focus on their words, but her gaze kept drifting to the window, where she saw Lucien walking alone across the school yard, his hands in his pockets, eyes fixed on the ground.

Ethan caught her staring and nudged her playfully. “Hey, Lemon, you okay? You’ve been zoning out all morning.”

Mia smiled knowingly. “Probably thinking about Lucien again. He’s been acting strangely lately.”

Lemon’s cheeks flushed. She hesitated for a moment before speaking softly. “I just… I want to tell him how I feel. I can’t keep pretending everything’s fine when I see him like that, so distant.”

Ethan chuckled. “You’re brave, Lemon. Just be careful, okay? Lucien’s not exactly the easiest person to read.”

Mia nodded. “But I believe in you. If anyone can make him open up, it’s you.”

The bell rang, and the classroom filled with the usual chatter. Lemon took her seat, heart pounding. She glanced at Lucien again, who now sat at his desk, head bent over a book, seemingly unaware of the world around him. She wondered what he was thinking, if her words from yesterday had left any impression. She wanted to be the one to break through his icy walls, to show him that beneath the veneer of indifference was a person capable of warmth and affection.

Mrs. Carter entered the room, her kind eyes sweeping over the students. She paused when she saw Lemon’s nervous expression and gave her a reassuring smile. “Lemon, I see you’re deep in thought. Remember, honesty is the best way to connect with others. Be yourself.”

Lemon nodded, her resolve firming. She knew she had to take a chance, no matter how scared she felt.

The lesson shifted to literature, but Lemon’s thoughts remained fixed on Lucien. During the break, she summoned her courage. Approaching him cautiously, she cleared her throat. “Hey, Lucien… can I talk to you for a minute?”

He looked up, surprised by her serious tone. “Sure,” he replied, closing his book gently.

Lemon took a deep breath. “I just… I wanted to tell you that I really enjoy spending time with you, even if I don’t always say it. You’re really important to me.”

For a moment, Lucien’s eyes flickered with something unreadable. He looked away, rubbing the back of his neck. “Lemon, I… I didn’t expect you to say that. I’ve always admired how genuine you are, but I don’t know if I’m ready for something like that.”

Her heart sank a little. “I understand. I just wanted you to know how I feel. No pressure. I just thought it was better to be honest.”

He hesitated, then offered her a small, rare smile. “Thanks for telling me. I… I’ll think about it.”

Lemon nodded, her cheeks glowing with hope. She knew it was only the beginning, but that moment had strengthened her resolve. She believed that with patience and sincerity, she could reach him.

Later that afternoon, Lemon sat under the blooming cherry blossom tree in the schoolyard, her mind replaying the conversation. She felt a gentle tap on her shoulder and turned to see Mia and Ethan approaching, their faces bright with encouragement.

“You did great,” Mia said cheerfully. “Lucien’s a tough nut to crack, but I think he’s starting to see that you’re serious.”

Ethan grinned. “Yeah, and if he doesn’t, we’ll help you break down his defenses.”

Lemon laughed softly, feeling a surge of warmth from her friends’ support. “Thank you. I just want to be honest with him, no matter what happens.”

As they sat together, the sky overhead darkened slightly, a sign of the changing season. Lemon looked up at the delicate pink petals falling around her, feeling a renewed sense of hope. Love, she realized, was like those petals—fragile yet resilient, beautiful enough to withstand the storm.

Meanwhile, across the school grounds, Lucien watched Lemon from a distance, his expression conflicted. He was used to hiding his feelings behind a mask of indifference, but Lemon’s sincerity was slowly unraveling that facade. He knew he needed to confront his own fears, to accept that opening his heart might be the most difficult challenge of all. The warmth of her words lingered in his mind, igniting a flicker of something he couldn’t quite name yet.

As the sun dipped lower, casting a golden hue over the world, Lemon felt a quiet confidence settle within her. Whatever the future held, she was determined to be honest, to be brave, and to follow her heart—no matter where it might lead. The journey was just beginning, and she was ready to face it with a smile.
