The First Candy Gesture
Lemon sat at her usual spot in the school courtyard, a vibrant pink strawberry-shaped notebook open on her lap. The warm afternoon sun cast gentle rays over her, illuminating her cheerful face as she doodled tiny strawberries around her notes. Her bright personality seemed to blend seamlessly with the lively buzz of students around her, yet her mind was preoccupied with thoughts that felt heavier than usual.
Mia plopped down beside her, a wide grin illuminating her face. "You seem distracted today. What's up, Lemon?"
Lemon hesitated for a moment, then smiled softly. "Oh, it's nothing. Just... thinking about Lucien. I want to tell him how I feel, but I don't know if now's the right time."
Mia nudged her playfully. "You’ve been talking about him non-stop lately. I swear, Lemon, you're like a strawberry in a field of roses—bright and sweet, but a little shy about stepping out."
Lemon rolled her eyes, giggling. "It's not that simple. Lucien's so... distant. I don’t want to ruin our friendship."
Mia's expression softened. "He’s just complicated. But I believe if anyone can break through his icy exterior, it’s you. You’ve got that warmth that can melt even the coldest hearts."
Their conversation was interrupted by Ethan, who approached with his usual confident stride. "Hey, Lemon, Mia. Heard you’re planning something. What’s the secret?"
Lemon blushed, glancing at Mia, who smirked knowingly. "No secrets, Ethan. Just... thinking about Lucien."
Ethan grinned mischievously. "Ah, the boy genius. Let me guess—you're planning to confess?"
Lemon nodded shyly. "I want to, but I’m nervous. What if he doesn’t feel the same?"
Ethan clapped her on the back. "You won’t know until you try. Besides, Lucien’s not as unapproachable as he seems. Deep down, I think he’s just waiting for someone to see the real him."
Lemon looked down at her notebook, her fingers tracing the outline of a strawberry. She took a deep breath, trying to steady her fluttering heart. The thought of revealing her feelings filled her with both excitement and trepidation.
Meanwhile, across the school grounds, Lucien was tucked away in the library, immersed in a mountain of textbooks. His brow furrowed as he absorbed complex equations and historical theories, but his focus was occasionally broken by a faint distraction—Lemon’s carefree laugh echoing from somewhere outside.
He closed his book with a sigh, feeling a strange warmth in his chest. He knew he’d been distant lately, lost in his thoughts about Lemon. Her relentless positivity and genuine kindness kept slipping into his consciousness, unwelcome and yet irresistible. He had never expected someone like her to see him, let alone make his heart race.
A soft knock at the library door pulled him from his reverie. Mrs. Carter peeked in, holding a tray with a cup of tea. "You’ve been buried in books all afternoon, Lucien. You should take a break. Maybe get some fresh air?"
He nodded silently, accepting the tea gratefully. Mrs. Carter’s gentle smile always had a way of calming him. "You’ve been working hard. Sometimes, the best ideas come when you’re relaxed."
As he sipped the tea, his mind drifted to Lemon’s radiant smile. She was like a burst of sunshine in his otherwise orderly world. Despite his initial indifference, he had begun to notice the subtle ways she reached out to him—her bright eyes, her cheerful greetings, the way she’d insist on sharing her strawberry-themed snacks.
He couldn’t deny that her persistence was starting to chip away at his icy exterior. The thought of confessing his feelings made him uneasy, but he also realized he didn’t want to keep hiding. Lemon’s sincerity was contagious, and perhaps it was time he took a chance.
Later that afternoon, Lemon found herself walking home with Mia, their conversation lively and carefree. The sky was painted with hues of pink and orange, mirroring Lemon’s fluttering anticipation.
Suddenly, Ethan appeared beside them, a playful grin on his face. "You know, Lemon, Lucien’s been acting a little different lately. I think he’s secretly into you."
Lemon’s cheeks flushed. "Ethan! Don’t tease."
Mia giggled. "Well, maybe it’s true. You’ve got the magic, Lemon."
Feeling a surge of courage, Lemon looked down at her feet, then back up at her friends. "I’ve decided I’ll tell him how I feel. No matter what happens, I want to be honest."
Mia and Ethan exchanged encouraging glances. "That’s the spirit," Mia said softly.
As they approached Lemon’s house, she took a deep breath, feeling a mixture of nervousness and hope. Her heart pounded in her chest as she imagined Lucien’s reaction—whether he would smile back or remain distant.
Inside, Lemon’s mother greeted her with a warm hug. "How was your day, sweetheart?"
Lemon hesitated briefly, then smiled brightly. "It was good. I’ve been thinking a lot about being brave. About love."
Mrs. Lee smiled knowingly. "Love is the most beautiful thing in this world, Lemon. Just remember, honesty and kindness are the keys."
Lemon nodded, clutching her strawberry notebook close. As she settled into her room, her mind replayed the moments she’d shared with Lucien—his quiet gaze, his gentle words—each one fueling her determination.
Later that evening, as the stars twinkled overhead, Lemon sat on her bed, clutching a small note she had written. Her hand trembled slightly as she prepared to write her confession, knowing that no matter the outcome, she had already taken a step toward something she believed was worth fighting for.
With a deep breath, she picked up her pen and began to write, pouring her heart into words that shimmered with hope. The night was quiet, but within her, a storm of feelings was stirring—bright, fierce, and full of promise.
