Chapter 9

Lemon's Bright Idea

Lemon’s heart fluttered as she hurried down the school corridor, clutching her bag tightly. Today, she had made up her mind—she was going to tell Lucien how she truly felt. The thought made her cheeks warm and her palms sweaty, but her determination outweighed her nerves. She remembered Mrs. Carter’s gentle encouragement, reminding her that honesty was the best way forward.

The corridor buzzed with activity, students chatting and rushing to their next classes. Lemon’s eyes scanned the crowd, searching for Lucien. She spotted him near his locker, engrossed in a thick book, his brow furrowed in concentration. He looked so calm and composed, yet Lemon sensed a flicker of curiosity in his eyes whenever he glanced her way. Her pulse quickened.

Taking a deep breath, Lemon approached him. “Hey, Lucien,” she greeted, voice trembling just slightly. “Can I talk to you for a moment?”

He looked up, surprised but polite. “Of course,” he replied, closing his book carefully. His cool demeanor made Lemon’s courage waver briefly, but she steadied herself.

“I… I just wanted to say,” she began, hesitating, “that I really enjoy spending time with you. You’re smart, kind, and I admire your dedication to everything you do.” Her words spilled out faster than she expected, cheeks burning. “I guess what I’m trying to say is… I like you. More than just a friend.”

Lucien blinked, taken aback. For a moment, he said nothing, simply studying her with those piercing eyes. The silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken emotion. Lemon’s heart pounded in her chest, unsure whether she had crossed a line or opened a door she couldn’t close.

He finally spoke, voice measured and calm. “Lemon, I didn’t expect you to say that.” He paused, searching her face as if trying to understand her sincerity. “You’re always so cheerful, so genuine. It’s… refreshing. But I need time to think about this.”

Lemon’s stomach sank a little, but she nodded quickly, trying to hide her disappointment. “I understand. Take all the time you need.” She forced a smile, her eyes shining with hope and vulnerability. “I just wanted you to know how I feel.”

As she turned to leave, Lucien reached out and gently stopped her. “Thank you for being honest with me. It means a lot,” he said softly. His gaze lingered on her, a hint of something unfamiliar flickering in his eyes—perhaps curiosity, perhaps something more.

Lemon hurried away, her heart pounding with a mixture of excitement and anxiety. She managed to keep her composure until she reached the safety of the school courtyard, where her best friends Mia and Ethan were waiting. Their faces lit up when they saw her approach, sensing her mood.

Mia gripped Lemon’s hand eagerly. “So, how did it go?” she asked, eyes twinkling with anticipation.

Lemon took a deep breath, a wide smile spreading across her face. “He didn’t say yes or no, but he said he needed time. I think that’s a good sign, isn’t it?”

Ethan grinned, giving her an encouraging nod. “That’s more than enough. Lucien’s a tough nut to crack, but I can see he’s starting to open up. You did great, Lemon.”

Mia nodded enthusiastically. “You were brave. I’m proud of you.” She squeezed Lemon’s shoulder affectionately. “Now, all we can do is wait and support her,” she added with a mischievous grin. “And maybe—just maybe—get Lucien to realize what he’s missing.”

Lemon’s cheeks flushed again, but she felt a newfound warmth inside her. Her friends’ support gave her strength, bolstering her resolve to be patient and hopeful. She knew that love, like a delicate flower, needed time and care to blossom fully.

Later that afternoon, Lemon found herself sitting under the big oak tree on the school grounds, her thoughts swirling. She pulled out her phone and sent a quick message to Mrs. Carter: “I told him how I feel. Now I just have to wait.” She hesitated, then added, “I hope I did the right thing.”

A warm smile appeared on her face when her phone buzzed back with Mrs. Carter’s reply: “Be proud of yourself, Lemon. Sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is simply be honest. Have faith in your kindness and sincerity—they will guide you.”

Lemon closed her eyes momentarily, feeling a gentle breeze ruffle her hair. She thought of her family at home, her little sister Lily, who always believed in her no matter what. She also thought of Lucien, with his sharp mind and distant exterior, slowly revealing glimpses of vulnerability.

She realized that this was only the beginning of something beautiful. It was a journey of patience, understanding, and trust. And no matter what the outcome, she knew she had already gained something precious—confidence in her own heart.

As the sun dipped lower in the sky, casting a golden glow over the schoolyard, Lemon stood up, determined to stay true to herself. Love might be unpredictable, but she was certain of one thing: her feelings were genuine, and she would continue to believe in the possibility of a future where their hearts could meet.
