Chapter 94

The Surprise Visit

Lemon’s heart fluttered as she stepped cautiously into the school courtyard, clutching her bag tightly against her side. The sun hung lazily in the sky, casting a warm glow over the familiar grounds she had traversed countless times, yet today felt different—charged with a quiet anticipation. Her cheeks still tinged with a faint blush from last night’s conversation, she wondered if Lucien had truly read her message or if he had simply dismissed it altogether.

She had spent the night tossing and turning, replaying their brief exchanges, trying to decipher the meaning behind his distant responses. She knew he was reserved, often guarded behind an icy veneer, but beneath that exterior, she sensed something softer, waiting to be uncovered. Today, she resolved to find out if there was a chance for something more than mere friendship.

As she approached her usual spot beneath the sprawling cherry blossom tree, Lemon’s eyes caught sight of Lucien sitting alone on a bench nearby. His head was bent over a thick textbook, the faint sunlight catching the edges of his dark hair. For a moment, she hesitated, feeling a nervous twinge in her stomach. Should she approach him? Or would her presence only make him retreat further?

Gathering her courage, Lemon took a few tentative steps forward. “Hey, Lucien,” she called softly, her voice carrying a gentle warmth. He looked up, eyes narrowing slightly in surprise, but then he offered a faint, almost reluctant smile. It was the kind of smile that hinted at curiosity, at the corners of his lips twitching upward despite his usual stoic demeanor.

He closed his book carefully and gestured toward the empty space beside him. “You came,” he said simply, his tone calm but tinged with a hint of something unspoken.

Lemon sat down cautiously, feeling her hands tremble just a little. “Yeah. I wanted to talk. About... well, us.” Her voice was steady, but her cheeks warmed as she met his gaze. “I’ve been thinking about what you said yesterday, about not wanting to rush things. I get it. I just— I want you to know that I’m patient. I’m here, whenever you’re ready.”

Lucien’s eyes flickered with a fleeting softness, a crack in his usual guarded exterior. He looked away briefly, as if wrestling with something internally, then returned his gaze to Lemon. “You’re different,” he murmured, almost to himself. “Most people wouldn’t bother trying to understand. They’d give up or get frustrated.”

Lemon blinked, surprised by his words. “I don’t give up easily,” she replied with a grin. “And I think everyone deserves a chance to be understood. Even someone like you.”

A silence stretched between them, comfortable yet filled with unspoken feelings. Lucien finally exhaled slowly, a hint of a smile curling at the corner of his mouth. “You’re persistent,” he said quietly. “It’s... refreshing, honestly. Most people don’t have that kind of patience.”

She felt her heart skip a beat. “Because I believe in you,” she admitted softly. “There’s more to you than just the cold exterior. I see it—hidden beneath, waiting to come out.”

Lucien looked down, his fingers tracing the edge of his notebook. “It’s not easy for me to show what I feel,” he confessed. “I’ve always been taught to keep things controlled, to focus on what’s important. Emotions can be... distracting.”

Lemon reached out and gently touched his hand, her fingers brushing against his cold skin. “Maybe, but sometimes, embracing those feelings is what makes us truly alive. You don’t have to hide everything. I want to see the real you.”

A flicker of vulnerability crossed Lucien’s face, and he looked away for a moment, his jaw clenched. “It’s complicated,” he said after a pause. “There are so many reasons I keep my distance. But... with you, it’s different. I feel like I can breathe a little easier.”

She squeezed his hand softly, her smile unwavering. “That’s all I want. To be there with you, step by step. No matter how slow or difficult it may seem.”

Lucien’s eyes finally met hers again, searching, as if trying to find reassurance in her expression. “Lemon, I... I don’t know what’s ahead, but I do know that I don’t want to push you away. Not anymore.”

A warm silence settled over them, filled with the unspoken promise of new beginnings. Lemon’s heart soared with hope, buoyed by the quiet strength of their connection. As the breeze rustled the cherry blossoms around them, she leaned in slightly, her voice barely above a whisper. “Then let’s take it one step at a time. Together.”

Lucien nodded slowly, a hint of genuine smile touching his lips for the first time in a long while. “Together,” he echoed softly.

For the first time in what felt like forever, Lemon felt the icy walls around Lucien’s heart begin to melt, piece by piece. And as they sat there under the blooming branches, the future stretched out before them, uncertain yet undeniably promising.
