Chapter 101

New Beginnings

Lemon stood at the edge of the school courtyard, clutching her backpack tightly as the late afternoon sun cast a warm golden glow across the grounds. Her cheeks still tingled from the nervous flutter that had refused to settle since she had nearly confessed her feelings to Lucien during lunch. The memory of his quiet, surprised expression lingered in her mind, fueling a mixture of hope and apprehension. She knew that the moment to speak her heart was coming, but the fear of rejection still whispered doubts into her ear.

Mia approached with her usual energetic stride, waving enthusiastically. Her bright eyes sparkled with curiosity. “Lemon, are you okay? You’ve been zoning out all afternoon. Did something happen?”

Lemon managed a small, reassuring smile. “Oh, it’s nothing, Mia. Just... thinking.”

Mia tilted her head, her smile turning playful. “Thinking about Lucien again, huh?” she teased gently.

Lemon blushed, lowering her gaze. “Maybe... I just want to tell him how I feel. But I’m scared he might not feel the same.”

Mia’s expression softened. She reached out and patted Lemon’s shoulder. “You’re brave for even thinking about it. Lucien’s been acting different lately, too. I think he’s starting to notice you more than he lets on.”

Lemon looked up, eyes wide with a mixture of hope and uncertainty. “Do you really think so?”

Before Mia could answer, Ethan appeared from around the corner, grinning mischievously. “Hey, Lemon! Mia! Heard you’re planning something big. Spill the beans!”

Lemon groaned softly, rubbing the back of her neck. “It’s not exactly a plan. Just... a feeling.”

Ethan chuckled. “Well, whatever it is, I support you. You’ve got this, Lemon. Just be yourself.”

The encouragement warmed her heart, but her nerves still fluttered wildly. She glanced over at the school building, where Lucien’s tall figure was visible through the window of the classroom. His face was focused, eyes darting across a textbook, but Lemon sensed a flicker of something deeper beneath his composed exterior.

A sudden gust of wind swept through the courtyard, rustling the leaves and carrying faint whispers of the approaching evening. Lemon took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. She knew that when the moment finally arrived, everything would depend on her sincerity.

As if summoned by her thoughts, Lucien stepped outside, his expression calm but with a hint of warmth that Lemon had begun to notice more often. His eyes met hers across the distance, and for a moment, time seemed to slow. Ethan nudged her subtly, giving her an encouraging nod.

Gathering her courage, Lemon took a tentative step forward. “Lucien,” she called softly, her voice trembling just enough to betray her nerves. He turned fully to face her, eyebrows raised in quiet curiosity.

“I... I wanted to talk to you,” Lemon said, voice catching slightly. “It’s about how I feel.”

Lucien’s gaze lingered on her, unreadable for a moment before a gentle smile touched his lips. “Go ahead,” he said softly.

Lemon’s heart hammered in her chest. She hesitated for a split second, then took a deep breath and looked directly into his eyes. “I like you. More than just a friend. I’ve liked you for a while now, and I just... I wanted to tell you. Because I believe in being honest about what’s in my heart.”

For a moment, Lucien remained silent, his expression thoughtful. Then, he reached out slowly, his hand hovering near hers before gently clasping it. His touch was warm and steady, and his voice was quiet but sincere. “Lemon, I’ve noticed you. Your kindness, your brightness—things I hadn’t allowed myself to see clearly before. I’ve been trying to understand my feelings, and I think... I feel the same way.”

Lemon’s eyes widened in disbelief, her cheeks flushing with a mixture of joy and relief. Ethan let out a low, triumphant whistle, and Mia clapped her hands softly, her smile radiant.

Lucien squeezed her hand gently. “I’ve been so focused on my studies, on keeping everything perfect. But you... you’ve shown me what it means to truly feel and connect. I want to get to know you better, Lemon. To see where this can go.”

A bright, genuine smile broke across Lemon’s face, lighting up her entire being. She felt her cheeks burn yet again, but this time with happiness. “I’d like that,” she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. “More than anything.”

Behind them, Ethan cheered quietly, and Mia beamed with pride. Lemon couldn’t help but laugh softly, feeling the warmth of Lucien’s hand in hers and the promise of something new blossoming between them. The sky above was painted in hues of orange and pink as the sun dipped lower, casting a romantic glow over the scene.

As they stood there, hands intertwined, Lemon realized that her courage had finally paid off. The road ahead might still be uncertain, but for now, she allowed herself to believe in the possibility of happiness—one that she would chase with all her heart. And beside her, Lucien’s steady presence reassured her that love, in all its quiet strength, was worth every risk she was willing to take.
