Chapter 103

Childhood Memories

Lemon’s heart fluttered as she hurried through the school corridors, clutching her notebook close to her chest. The sunlight streamed through the tall windows, casting a warm glow over the bustling hallway. Today felt different—there was an air of anticipation she couldn't quite shake. She had spent the past few days grappling with her feelings, unsure whether to confess or keep her emotions hidden. But now, with her friends’ encouragement echoing in her mind, she decided it was time to be brave.

Mia was waiting near their usual spot by the lockers, bouncing on her heels with her signature bright smile. “Lemon! You look excited. What’s up?” she asked, eyes sparkling with curiosity.

Lemon took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. “I think I want to talk to Lucien. Really talk to him. I’ve been thinking about how I feel, and I don’t want to hide anymore.”

Mia’s grin widened. “That’s the Lemon I know! You’re brave. Just be yourself, and everything will be fine.” Her words brought a small surge of confidence to Lemon’s chest.

They made their way to the classroom, where Lucien was already seated, immersed in a thick book. His hair was slightly tousled, and his glasses reflected the sunlight as he turned the page. Lemon’s stomach fluttered again. She had watched him from afar for so long, admiring his intellect and calm demeanor. But today, she was determined to bridge the gap between admiration and genuine connection.

As they approached, Ethan caught sight of them and beckoned Lucien with a playful smirk. “Hey, Lucien. Looks like Lemon’s got something important to say,” he teased.

Lucien looked up, eyes narrowing slightly, and then he caught Lemon’s determined expression. He closed his book softly and pushed his glasses up his nose. “What’s going on?” he asked, voice steady but curious.

Lemon hesitated only for a moment before stepping forward. “Lucien… I’ve been wanting to tell you something for a while now. I really enjoy spending time with you, and I think I’ve started to like you more than just a friend.”

There was a brief silence, broken only by the faint rustling of papers and the distant hum of students in other rooms. Lucien’s eyes widened slightly, and for a moment, he seemed caught off guard. His usual composure was softening, revealing a flicker of emotion beneath his cool exterior.

“I… didn’t expect that,” he finally said, voice quiet but sincere. “You’re always so cheerful, so full of energy. It’s hard to believe you feel that way about me.”

Lemon’s cheeks flushed. “I know I can be loud and bubbly, but underneath all that, I’m serious. I just… I wanted you to know how I feel. I like you, Lucien. More than just a classmate or friend.”

He looked down at his hands, fingers nervously fidgeting with the edge of his sleeve. For a moment, he seemed lost in thought, as if weighing his feelings. Then, slowly, he looked up, eyes meeting hers with a gentle intensity Lemon hadn’t seen before.

“I’ve always admired your kindness and your positivity,” he admitted softly. “It’s difficult for me to open up, but… I think I’ve started to feel the same way. Seeing you smile, hearing your laugh… it’s made me realize how much I’ve been missing out by keeping everything guarded.”

A smile broke across Lemon’s face, bright and genuine. Her heart pounded so loudly she was afraid he might hear it. Ethan and Mia watched from a distance, exchanging excited glances, silently cheering her on.

Lucien took a small step closer, hesitating briefly before reaching out to gently take her hand. His touch was warm, tentative, yet firm. “Thank you for telling me,” he whispered. “I’ve wanted to say something too, but I didn’t know how. You’ve already started to change how I see the world—more colorful, more alive.”

Lemon’s eyes shimmered with tears of happiness. She squeezed his hand softly, feeling a surge of courage and hope. “Maybe we can take it one step at a time,” she suggested, voice trembling with emotion. “Get to know each other better… see where this could go.”

Lucien nodded, a faint smile touching his lips. “I’d like that.”

Behind them, Mia let out an excited squeal, and Ethan gave a thumbs-up. The classroom door swung open, but neither Lemon nor Lucien paid attention. They were lost in their newfound connection, the world around them fading into the background. In that quiet, fleeting moment, two hearts had finally found their way to each other. Their smiles were shy but genuine, carrying the promise of a future where even the coldest of hearts could melt into warmth.
