Chapter 111

The Unexpected Challenge

Lemon stood quietly at the edge of the school courtyard, clutching a small, crumpled note in her trembling hands. The late afternoon sunlight cast a warm glow over the familiar scenery, but her mind was elsewhere, swirling with nervous anticipation. Today was the day she had decided to finally tell Lucien how she felt—her heart pounding with a mixture of hope and fear that felt almost overwhelming.

She watched him from a distance, seated at his usual spot beneath the sprawling oak tree, engrossed in a thick book. His brow furrowed slightly as he read, a look of intense concentration that Lemon found both intimidating and endearing. She took a deep breath, trying to steady her racing thoughts. It was now or never.

Mia's words echoed in her mind: Be brave, Lemon. Just tell him how you feel. Lucien might be distant, but he’s not unkind. Maybe he feels the same way. She clenched her fists, then gently unfolded the note she had scribbled earlier. Her handwriting was shaky, but she had poured her heart into every word.

Gathering her courage, Lemon took a tentative step forward, then another. Each step felt heavier than the last, but her resolve grew stronger with every heartbeat. As she approached, she saw Ethan lurking nearby, casually leaning against the fence, eyes twinkling with mischief and support. She nodded at him gratefully—they had promised to be her silent witnesses, ready to cheer her on if she faltered.

When Lemon finally reached the base of the oak tree, her voice caught in her throat. She hesitated, looking up at Lucien’s focused face. His sharp features, framed by dark hair that gently fell over his forehead, seemed to soften as he noticed her presence. For a moment, they simply stared at each other, the air thick with unspoken emotions.

“Lucien,” Lemon managed, her voice barely above a whisper. She took a shaky breath and held out the note. “I… I wanted to give you this.”

He looked down at the paper, eyes narrowing slightly as he read her words. Her heart pounded louder, each second feeling like an eternity. She watched his expression carefully, hoping to see some sign of understanding, of reciprocation. But Lucien remained silent, studying her with an inscrutable gaze.

“I’ve liked you for a long time,” she continued, her cheeks flushing. “More than just as a classmate or friend. I know I’m probably too bold, but I couldn’t keep it inside anymore. I just wanted you to know.”

For a moment, Lucien’s eyes flickered with something—perhaps surprise, or contemplation. He closed the book slowly, setting it aside as he straightened up. His expression was guarded, yet there was a hint of softness beneath his usual cold exterior. He looked at her then, truly looked, and Lemon felt both vulnerable and hopeful.

“I… didn’t expect this,” he admitted softly. His voice was quiet but sincere. “Lemon, you’re… different. Bright and full of life. It’s something I’ve noticed, even if I didn’t know how to react.”

Lemon’s heart fluttered at his words. She wondered if this was the moment everything she’d dreamed of—the moment Lucien might finally see her for who she truly was.

“I don’t want to hurt you,” he continued, his gaze dropping to the ground for a brief moment. “But I’ve always been distant because I don’t know how to handle these kinds of feelings myself. I’ve spent so long trying to keep my emotions in check, to stay focused on my studies. But… you make me want to be different.”

Her eyes widened, hope blooming anew. Could this be the beginning of something real? Was Lucien truly opening up to her?

Before she could respond, Ethan’s voice broke softly through the quiet air. “Hey, Lucien, Lemon,” he called out, stepping closer with a grin. “Looks like you’re finally having the talk. Don’t worry, we’re all rooting for you.”

Lucien shot Ethan a quick, amused glance before turning back to Lemon. “I don’t have all the answers right now,” he said, voice steady but gentle. “But I do know that I want to try—to understand what these feelings mean and where they might lead. If you’re willing to wait and see, I think I’d like that.”

Lemon’s eyes shimmered with unshed tears of happiness. She nodded eagerly, a bright smile spreading across her face. “I’ll wait as long as it takes.”

Ethan chuckled, clapping his friend on the shoulder. “Good. Now, maybe don’t make her wait too long, alright?”

Lucien’s lips curled into a rare, genuine smile—a small, shy curve that Lemon thought might be the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. For the first time, the icy walls he often kept around himself seemed to melt just a little, revealing a warmth that matched her own.

As the sun dipped lower in the sky, casting long shadows across the courtyard, Lemon felt a lightness in her chest—a quiet certainty that love, with all its uncertainties, was worth every brave step she had taken. And in that moment, she knew that whatever the future held, she and Lucien would face it together, hand in hand, hearts open and ready to explore the possibilities ahead.
