Chapter 117

The Little Moments Matter

Lemon’s heart fluttered as she stood by the school gates, clutching her bag a little tighter. The sun was shining brightly, casting a warm glow over the courtyard where students hurried past, oblivious to the storm of emotions brewing inside her. Today felt different—more significant than any other day. She had been waiting for this moment for a while now, and her nerves flickered like a candle about to flicker out. But she knew she had to be brave.

Mia was already waiting beside her, bouncing slightly on her heels, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “Are you ready?” she whispered, nudging Lemon gently. “It’s now or never.”

Lemon nodded, taking a deep breath. She glanced over at Mia and then turned toward the school building, where Lucien was waiting near his locker. He was engrossed in sorting through his books, his brow furrowed ever so slightly, unaware of Lemon’s presence. The sight of him, so focused and distant, made her heart pound even faster. She hesitated for a moment, then stepped forward.

“Lucien,” she called softly, her voice trembling just a little.

He looked up, surprise flickering across his face when he saw her. His icy exterior didn’t quite hide the warmth in his eyes, but he quickly masked it with his usual composed expression. “Lemon,” he replied, voice steady but with an undertone of curiosity.

“I, um… I wanted to talk,” she started, feeling her cheeks heat up. “I’ve been thinking about everything lately, and I just… I wanted to tell you how I feel.”

There was a pause, a silence filled with anticipation. Lucien’s eyes studied her face, as if weighing her words. Then, slowly, a faint smile tugged at his lips, softening the usually stern features that so many students admired.

“You’re brave,” he said quietly. “I’ve noticed how you always try to brighten everyone’s day, Lemon. It’s… admirable.”

Lemon’s heart skipped a beat. She had hoped for some acknowledgment, some sign that her feelings were understood. Yet, hearing his words, her confidence grew. She took a step closer, feeling the warmth of her own resolve.

“Lucien, I like you. More than just as a friend. I… I’ve liked you for a while now. And I want to be honest about it.”

For a moment, silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken emotions. Lucien’s gaze softened, and he looked down briefly, as if gathering his thoughts. Then he looked back up, meeting her eyes with a hint of vulnerability she hadn’t seen before.

“I… I didn’t realize,” he admitted softly. “You’ve always been so cheerful, so full of life. It’s easy to overlook how deeply you feel.”

Lemon felt a blush creeping up her cheeks, but she held her ground. “I just wanted to be truthful. Because I believe in honesty—no matter what happens.”

Lucien took a step closer, lowering his voice. “Lemon, I’ve been… distant because I didn’t know how to handle these feelings. But hearing you now, I realize I’ve been missing out on something important. I like you, too.”

Her breath caught. She had never expected him to say that, not so openly and honestly. Her smile broke free, bright and genuine. “Really?”

He nodded, a rare warmth shining through his usually reserved demeanor. “Really.”

Before she could say more, a voice called out from behind. “Hey! Lemon! Mia told me you were planning to confess today! I knew you’d be brave.” It was Mrs. Carter, her homeroom teacher, walking toward them with a gentle smile. Her eyes twinkled with encouragement.

Lemon turned, blushing slightly. “Mrs. Carter… I was just about to tell Lucien how I feel.”

Mrs. Carter nodded approvingly. “That’s wonderful. Remember, honesty is the first step toward something beautiful. You both are brave, and I’m proud of you.”

As Mrs. Carter’s words settled in Lemon’s heart, Lucien reached out, taking her hand gently. His touch was tentative but firm, conveying more than words ever could.

Mia grinned from the side, giving a thumbs-up. “See? I told you you’d be great. Now, go on—start your new chapter.”

Lemon squeezed Lucien’s hand, feeling a surge of confidence. She looked into his eyes and saw a flicker of the same hope she was holding onto. For the first time, she believed that their story was just beginning—one filled with sincerity, courage, and a little bit of strawberry-flavored sweetness.

The bell rang softly in the background, signaling the start of another school day, but for Lemon and Lucien, everything else faded away. In that quiet moment, standing hand in hand, they knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them together—with honesty, kindness, and a newfound understanding that love, no matter how icy or bright, always begins with a single honest step.
