Chapter 156

The Silver Anniversary

Lemon sat quietly at her usual corner table in the school courtyard, a faint blush lingering on her cheeks as she watched Lucien across the open space. The sunlight caught the subtle glint in his eyes when he looked up from his book, and she hurriedly looked away, pretending to be engrossed in her notes. Her heart fluttered every time she caught a glimpse of him—yet she also felt a twinge of nervousness, unsure of what to say or do now that her feelings had begun to blossom so openly.

Mia sidled over, plopping down beside her with a grin. “You’ve been staring at him all morning. Spill! What's going on between you two?”

Lemon’s cheeks warmed further. “Nothing. Just... observing,” she said softly, biting her lip.

Mia giggled. “Come on, Lemon. You’re terrible at hiding things. I’ve seen the way you look at him. It’s obvious you like him.”

Lemon looked down, fiddling with the edge of her notebook. “I do... but I don’t know if he feels the same. He’s so distant sometimes, like he's in his own world. I don’t want to ruin anything by rushing.”

Mia nudged her gently. “You’re brave enough to be yourself. And Lucien? He's not as cold as he seems. Sometimes people just need a little push to open up.”

Just then, Lucien’s gaze shifted in their direction. Lemon’s stomach fluttered again. She quickly looked away, pretending to be absorbed in her book. She hoped he hadn’t noticed her staring.

From a distance, Ethan approached with his usual easygoing stride. “Hey, Lemon! Hey, Mia!” he called out, waving. He paused, eyeing Lucien with a knowing look. “You know, Lucien’s been a lot more relaxed lately. Maybe he’s finally realizing how awesome Lemon is.”

Lemon’s cheeks flushed at Ethan’s teasing tone. “Ethan, don’t be so dramatic,” she said, trying to brush off his comment.

Ethan chuckled. “Hey, I’m just saying what everyone’s thinking. You’ve got that spark, Lemon. Don’t let it fade.”

Meanwhile, Lucien had started walking toward them, his expression unreadable but with an unusual softness in his eyes. As he approached, Lemon’s heart pounded even more intensely. She felt a mixture of anticipation and fear—what if he said something that would change everything?

Lucien stopped just a few steps away, his gaze flickering between Lemon and her friends. His voice was calm but deliberate. “Lemon, can I talk to you for a moment?”

Lemon’s breath hitched. She nodded, voice barely above a whisper. “Of course.”

They moved to a quieter corner under a large sakura tree, its petals gently falling around them like delicate pink snow. Lucien looked down at his hands for a moment before speaking.

“I’ve been thinking a lot lately,” he said softly. “About how I’ve always kept people at arm’s length—about how I never really let anyone get close. But with you, Lemon, it’s different. You make me want to try.”

Lemon’s eyes widened, her heart pounding so loudly she was afraid he might hear it. “You mean…?”

Lucien took a deep breath. “I like you. More than I expected. And I want to see where this could go, if you’re willing.”

A stunned silence filled the space between them, broken only by the gentle rustling of the sakura leaves. Lemon’s cheeks burned with happiness, and tears threatened to well up in her eyes. She managed a small, trembling smile. “I like you too, Lucien. I’ve liked you for a while now. I just didn’t know if I should say anything.”

He looked surprised for a moment but then nodded slowly, as if he’d been waiting for her to say it all along. “I was afraid that I’d be too cold or distant for you to understand. But I realize now that being honest is better than hiding my feelings.”

Lemon reached out, her hand trembling slightly, and took his. The warmth of his touch sent a wave of reassurance through her. “I’m glad you told me. And I want to be with you, if you’re willing to take that step.”

Lucien’s lips twitched into the faintest of smiles. “I am.”

Back in the courtyard, Mia and Ethan watched from a distance, exchanging excited glances. Mia nudged Ethan. “See? I told you he’d come around.”

Ethan grinned. “Yeah, but I didn’t think it’d happen so fast. Lemon’s got a way of bringing out the best in people.”

As they returned to the main area, Lemon and Lucien stayed under the sakura tree, their fingers intertwined. The gentle petals continued to drift lazily from above, carrying their whispered promises into the soft breeze.

Lemon leaned into him slightly, feeling a newfound confidence bloom within her. She had taken a chance, and it had paid off. For the first time, she believed that love could flourish even in the most unexpected places, if you only dared to be honest and brave.

Lucien’s gaze was steady now, no longer distant but filled with genuine affection. His heart, once guarded and icy, was melting under the warmth of Lemon’s sincerity. And as they stood together beneath the falling sakura petals, the world around them seemed to glow a little brighter, promising a future filled with hope, love, and endless possibilities.
