Chapter 161

The Last Days Together

Lemon's heart fluttered as she stepped into the quiet sanctuary of the school’s rooftop, the place she often visited when she needed clarity or a moment to herself. The late afternoon sun cast a warm, golden glow over the city skyline, illuminating the world below and giving everything an almost ethereal quality. She carried with her a small, carefully wrapped cupcake from her bag, its strawberry-flavored aroma lingering softly in the air.

She had told herself she needed to do this—needed to find the courage to speak her feelings, to finally tell Lucien what had been growing inside her for weeks. The idea made her stomach tighten with nervous anticipation, but her determination kept her moving forward. As she reached the top, she saw him sitting alone on the edge of the rooftop, his usual composed expression softened by the waning sunlight.

Lucien's sharp eyes caught sight of her approaching, and he offered a faint, almost imperceptible nod. His posture was relaxed but guarded, as if bracing himself for whatever she might say. Lemon hesitated for a moment, clutching the cupcake tightly, then took a deep breath and stepped closer.

"Hi, Lucien," she said softly, her cheeks tinged with a blush. "I brought you something."

His gaze flicked to the cupcake, then back to her, eyebrows raised slightly in curiosity. "You didn’t have to," he replied, his voice calm but tinged with a hint of surprise.

Lemon smiled, her heart pounding a little faster. "I know, but I wanted to. It’s strawberry. One of my favorites." She extended the small treat toward him, her fingers trembling just a bit. "I thought maybe we could share it?"

For a moment, Lucien said nothing, his expression unreadable. Then, slowly, he reached out and took the cupcake, his fingertips brushing hers briefly. His eyes held a flicker of warmth—an unfamiliar tenderness that made Lemon’s pulse race even more. She took a step back, nervous but hopeful.

"I’ve been thinking," she began, voice earnest. "About how I feel when I’m around you. I know I’m not the smartest or the most serious person, but I want you to know that I like you—more than just a friend. I want to be someone you can count on. Someone who makes you smile."

Lucien’s gaze dropped to the cupcake in his hand, then back up to her. His usual icy exterior seemed to melt just a little, revealing a flicker of vulnerability beneath. The silence stretched between them, heavy but gentle.

He finally spoke, his voice low but unwavering. "Lemon, I’ve noticed you—your energy, your kindness. It’s hard for me to open up, but you make it easier. I’ve been trying to understand what I feel, and I think… I think I like you too."

A rush of warmth flooded Lemon’s chest, and her cheeks blushed even brighter. She felt her smile break free, genuine and bright as the sun. "Really? You do?"

Lucien nodded, a faint, rare smile touching his lips. "Yes. I’ve never been good at expressing myself, but I want to try. I want to see where this could go."

They sat in silence for a moment, the city noise distant beneath them, caught in the quiet intimacy of the moment. Lemon felt a surge of happiness and relief, the kind that makes everything seem brighter, more vivid. She reached out and gently took his hand, feeling the coolness of his skin but also the warmth beneath.

"Thank you," she whispered. "For giving me a chance."

Lucien looked at their intertwined hands, his gaze softening even further. "You’ve already given me so much, Lemon. Your kindness, your courage… I want to be someone worth your affection."

She squeezed his hand gently, her heart swelling with hope. "Then let’s see what happens. Together."

As the sun dipped lower, casting long shadows across the rooftop, they stayed there, hand in hand, embracing the uncertainty of what lay ahead. Lemon knew there would be challenges, moments of doubt, but for now, she was content. The world felt full of promise, and with Lucien by her side, she believed they could face anything.

The breeze picked up, carrying the sweet scent of strawberries and the scent of new beginnings. Lemon leaned her head on Lucien’s shoulder, feeling a quiet sense of belonging she had longed for. And in that peaceful, fleeting moment, both of them understood that love, no matter how hesitant or fragile at first, was something they would nurture together—step by step, heart to heart.
