Chapter 164

The Memories Preserved

Lemon’s heart fluttered as she hurried down the corridor, clutching her books tightly against her chest. The sun’s rays filtered through the stained-glass windows, casting colorful patterns on the polished wooden floors. Today felt different—there was an undercurrent of anticipation she couldn’t quite place. She took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves, as she approached the classroom where Lucien was waiting.

Inside, Lucien sat at his desk, head bowed over a thick book, his sharp features illuminated by the soft glow of the afternoon light. His usual aloofness seemed softer today, almost contemplative. Lemon hesitated for a moment before stepping forward, her cheeks warming.

“Hey,” she greeted softly, trying to keep her voice steady. “Did you finish the assignment?”

Lucien looked up, eyes narrowing slightly as if surprised to see her. A faint smile tugged at his lips, almost shy. “Yes. It’s… done. Thanks for asking.”

Lemon blinked, feeling a strange warmth spread through her. She had been nervously rehearsing what to say all morning, but now that she was here, words seemed to tumble out unexpectedly.

“I was thinking,” she began, clutching her hands nervously. “Maybe we could work on it together? I mean, if you want to. I’d really appreciate your help.”

Lucien’s eyes flickered with something she couldn’t quite identify—surprise, maybe, or curiosity. He closed his book carefully and set it aside. “Sure,” he said simply, voice calm but with a hint of softness. “It might be helpful.”

They moved to a corner of the room, spreading out their materials. Lemon’s mind raced, trying to find the right words to say what she’d been feeling for weeks. Her gaze kept drifting to Lucien’s face, noticing how his usually distant expression seemed less guarded now.

As they worked together, Lemon found herself stealing glances at him, her heart pounding in her chest. She wanted to say so much more—to tell him how much he’d come to mean to her, how every small gesture, every quiet moment, had built up into something she couldn’t ignore anymore. But words felt heavy in her throat, and she hesitated.

Lucien, sensing her silence, looked up again. His eyes met hers, and there was a flicker of understanding there—something unspoken passing between them. He reached out and gently took her hand, guiding her gaze back to the assignment. His touch was subtle but warm, making Lemon’s cheeks flush anew.

“Lemon,” he said softly, breaking the silence. “I’ve noticed you’ve been… different lately. More cheerful. More yourself.”

She blinked, surprised by his words. “Really? I thought I was just being me.”

He smiled slightly, a rare tenderness in his expression. “You’re more than just you. You’re brave. You’re kind. And I… I’ve been trying to understand these feelings I’ve been having—about you.”

Lemon’s breath hitched. Her heart pounded so loudly she was afraid he might hear it. She looked down, cheeks burning brighter. “I’ve liked you for a while now,” she admitted softly. “Ever since we started talking more. I guess I just didn’t know how to say it.”

Lucien’s eyes widened slightly, then he leaned closer, voice barely above a whisper. “I’ve felt the same. But I didn’t want to ruin what we have. I was afraid if I showed my feelings, everything would change.”

She reached out, tentatively placing her hand over his. “Maybe it already has. Maybe it’s supposed to.”

A gentle smile played on his lips as he squeezed her hand. “I think so. Lemon, I want to be with you—if you’ll have me.”

Her heart swelled at his words, and she nodded quickly, unable to contain her happiness. “Yes. I want that more than anything.”

They sat in a comfortable silence for a moment, the weight of unspoken feelings finally lifting. Lemon felt a newfound confidence blooming inside her, fueled by the warmth of Lucien’s presence. She realized that sometimes, the bravest thing to do was simply to be honest with oneself and the person who made your heart race.

Just then, the classroom door swung open, and Mrs. Carter peeked in, her eyes twinkling with understanding. “I see you two are having a moment,” she said softly, a knowing smile on her face. “Remember, honesty and kindness are always the best guides.”

Lemon’s cheeks turned pink again, but she held Lucien’s gaze, feeling more certain than ever. With her best friend’s blessing and the promise of a future they could build together, she knew this was only the beginning of a new chapter—one filled with hope, love, and endless possibilities.
