The Stories Passed Down
Lemon’s heart fluttered as she hurried through the school corridors, clutching her bag tightly against her side. The hallway buzzed with the usual chatter, but her mind was fixated on the small, trembling hope blossoming within her. Today was the day she had decided to finally share her feelings with Lucien, despite the knot of nervousness twisting in her stomach.
She spotted him near the lockers, engrossed in a thick book, his brow furrowed in concentration. For a moment, she hesitated, watching him from afar. His icy exterior had begun to thaw around her, and she could see glimpses of the gentle, thoughtful boy beneath the surface. With a deep breath, she summoned her courage and stepped forward.
“Hey, Lucien,” she greeted softly, her voice slightly trembling but filled with warmth. He looked up, his piercing gaze meeting hers, and for a moment, she wondered if he sensed her nervousness. But then, a faint, almost imperceptible smile touched his lips.
“Hello, Lemon,” he replied, closing his book carefully. There was a flicker of curiosity in his eyes as he regarded her. She took a step closer, trying to steady her trembling hands.
“I’ve been thinking about something,” she started, cheeks flushing. “And I wanted to tell you… I really enjoy spending time with you. More than I expected. And I guess what I’m trying to say is… I like you. A lot.”
The words hung in the air, delicate yet heavy with significance. Lemon’s eyes searched his face, trying to gauge his reaction. For a moment, Lucien remained silent, his expression unreadable. Then, he slowly leaned back against the lockers, a faint blush dusting his cheeks.
“You’re very brave,” he said softly, voice hesitant yet genuine. “I’ve noticed how you always try to brighten everyone’s day, including mine. Your kindness is… contagious.” His eyes flickered with something Lemon couldn’t quite decipher—an emotion that resembled warmth, perhaps even affection.
Her heart pounded wildly in her chest, but she felt a strange sense of relief. She had taken the risk, and even if the outcome wasn’t exactly what she hoped for, she was proud of herself for being honest.
Lucien hesitated for a moment, then reached out, gently taking her hand in his. His touch was tentative, as if he was testing the waters of his own feelings. “I’ve admired your courage for a while now,” he admitted quietly. “You’ve started to open a part of me I didn’t know existed.”
Lemon’s cheeks grew even redder, but she couldn’t help the smile that spread across her face. It was as if a weight had been lifted from her shoulders, replaced by a newfound hope. She squeezed his hand gently, feeling the warmth of his touch seep into her.
“I was worried I might be too forward,” she confessed softly. “But I couldn’t keep it inside anymore. I just… I really like you, Lucien. More than I ever thought I could.”
He looked down at their intertwined hands, a faint smile playing on his lips. “Sometimes, the most unexpected feelings can surprise us,” he murmured. “I think I’ve been feeling something similar. But I was afraid—afraid of how you might react, or how I might change.”
Lemon tilted her head, her eyes shining with hope. “Change can be good,” she whispered. “And I want to find out where this might lead us—together.”
A gentle silence settled between them, filled with the quiet hum of the school around them. Lucien finally released her hand, but his gaze lingered on her face, contemplative yet softened. “I don’t want to hurt you,” he said earnestly. “But I also don’t want to hide what I feel anymore.”
Lemon nodded, feeling a surge of happiness that made her almost dizzy. “We’ll figure it out together,” she promised, her voice steady despite her fluttering heart. “No matter what happens, I believe in us.”
Lucien’s lips curved into a faint, genuine smile. “Then let’s take it one step at a time.”
As they stood there, the corridor seemed to fade into the background. In that moment, Lemon knew she had taken a leap of faith, and it was leading her somewhere she had only dared to dream of—toward a future where love and friendship intertwined, guided by honesty and courage. And with Lucien’s hand in hers, she felt ready to face whatever came next.
