Chapter 12

Lingering in the Hallway

Lemon’s heart fluttered as she hurried down the school corridor, clutching a small, carefully wrapped box in her hands. Her cheeks tinged with pink, not just from the chilly breeze outside but from the nervous anticipation bubbling within her. Today was the day she had decided to finally confess her feelings to Lucien, and despite her usual cheerful optimism, a nervous flicker of doubt flickered in her mind.

She paused briefly outside the classroom, taking a deep breath to steady herself. The door was slightly ajar, and she could hear the faint hum of voices and the rustling of papers. Gathering her courage, Lemon stepped inside. Lucien was seated at his desk, head bent over a book, his brow furrowed in concentration. He looked up as she entered, his icy blue eyes narrowing slightly in a curious, almost guarded expression.

“Hi, Lucien,” Lemon greeted, her voice a little higher than usual. She forced a bright smile, clutching the box behind her back. “I brought you something.”

Lucien tilted his head, studying her with a mixture of suspicion and intrigue. “What is it?”

Lemon hesitated, then held out the small package with trembling fingers. “It’s a little gift. For you.”

He reached out, taking it carefully. His fingers brushed her palm briefly, sending a strange warmth through her. She watched nervously as he unwrapped the paper, revealing a simple, hand-decorated box with a tiny red ribbon. For a moment, he said nothing, simply opening the lid to reveal a small jar of strawberry jam—her favorite flavor, which she had picked up from the market just that morning.

Lucien looked at her with a hint of surprise, then a faint, almost reluctant smile touched his lips. “Thank you,” he said softly, his voice uncharacteristically gentle.

Lemon’s heart thumped loudly in her chest. She had prepared herself for a range of reactions—rejection, confusion, even indifference—and yet, his words felt like a small victory. She took a step closer, her cheeks flushed. “I wanted to give you something that I thought you’d like. You know, since I know how much you love those little things.”

Lucien’s eyes flickered with something unreadable, and for a moment, he seemed to look away, as if fighting an internal battle. Then, he spoke, his tone measured but softer than usual. “That’s very kind of you, Lemon.”

She nodded eagerly, pushing aside her nervousness. “I… I’ve been meaning to tell you something for a while now. I think you’re really special, and I just want you to know how much I enjoy spending time with you. Even if I’m a little… awkward sometimes.”

Lucien’s gaze returned to her, and she caught a fleeting glimpse of vulnerability behind his cool exterior. “You’re not awkward,” he said quietly. “You’re… genuine.”

Her heart soared at his words. Encouraged, she took a tentative step closer, lowering her voice to a whisper. “I like you, Lucien. More than just as a friend. I’ve liked you for a long time now, and I thought… maybe you might feel the same someday.”

The silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken emotions. Lucien looked down at the jam jar, then back at her, his expression unreadable. He ran a hand through his hair, a rare gesture of hesitation, and then finally spoke. “Lemon, I… I’m not good at this kind of thing. I’ve always been distant because I didn’t want to hurt anyone or get involved in something I couldn’t handle.”

Lemon nodded, understanding flickering in her eyes. “I get it. I just wanted you to know how I feel. No pressure. I just thought you should hear it from me.”

He looked at her again, his gaze steady now. “Your honesty is… admirable,” he said softly. “And I appreciate it. I’ve been… trying to understand my own feelings lately. You’ve made me realize that maybe I’ve been shutting myself off from something important.”

Lemon’s smile widened, her cheeks glowing with happiness. “Really?”

Lucien hesitated, then reached out, gently taking her hand in his. His touch was tentative but warm, and his voice was almost a whisper. “Maybe it’s time I stop hiding. You’ve shown me that kindness can be powerful, Lemon. I want to see where this could go.”

The corridor seemed to brighten around them, as if the universe itself was blessing this fragile moment of connection. Lemon squeezed his hand gently, feeling a rush of hope and happiness she hadn’t even dared to dream of. She knew there would be challenges ahead, but for now, everything felt right.

As they stood there, the bell rang softly, signaling the end of the school day. Students began to stream past, but for Lemon and Lucien, the world outside faded away. In that quiet, intimate space, they found a new beginning—one filled with promise, understanding, and the courage to be themselves.

Lemon looked up at him, her eyes sparkling. “Thank you for listening, Lucien. I’ll be here, whenever you’re ready.”

He nodded, a faint, genuine smile playing on his lips. “And I’ll try to be better at showing how I feel. You’ve already given me so much, Lemon.”

With that, they both knew this was just the start of something beautiful. A journey of discovery, patience, and love that would grow stronger with each passing day. And in that moment, beneath the soft glow of the setting sun streaming through the classroom window, Lemon felt more confident than ever that her feelings had found their way into a heart that was finally open.
