Chapter 17

A Walk Home Together

Lemon felt her heart flutter as she hurried down the school corridor, clutching a small, carefully wrapped box in her hands. The sun streamed through the windows, casting warm patterns on the polished floors, but her mind was a whirlwind of nervous excitement. Today was the day she intended to finally tell Lucien how she felt—her feelings bubbling up like a fizzy soda, impossible to contain any longer.

She paused outside his classroom, taking a deep breath to steady herself. Inside, Lucien sat at his desk, engrossed in a thick textbook, his brow furrowed in concentration. His usual cool demeanor seemed even more distant today, perhaps because Lemon’s heart was pounding with anticipation. She hesitated for a moment, then gently knocked on the doorframe.

Lucien looked up, his icy blue eyes meeting hers and instantly softening at her eager expression. “Lemon? Is everything okay?” he asked, closing his book slowly.

She nodded quickly, cheeks flushing. “I, um… I brought you something. I’ve been thinking about it for a while. Can I… can I give it to you?”

His brow arched slightly, curious. “Of course. What is it?”

With trembling fingers, Lemon unfolded her hands and presented the small box. “It’s… just a little gift. For you.”

Lucien’s gaze shifted to the package, then back to her, a flicker of surprise crossing his face. Carefully, he took it into his hands, peeling back the wrapping paper to reveal a small, delicate box decorated with tiny strawberries—a motif Lemon knew he liked. Inside was a silver keychain shaped like a heart, engraved with a simple message: *For Lucien, to remind you how special you are.*

He looked at her, stunned. “Lemon, this is very thoughtful. Thank you.”

Her eyes sparkled. “I just wanted you to know how much I… I mean, I really like you. Not just as a friend, but more than that.”

The words tumbled out before she could second-guess herself. Her cheeks burned with embarrassment, but she kept her gaze steady, hoping for some sign that Lucien understood.

Lucien stared at the gift, then at her, and for a long moment, silence hung between them. He seemed to be searching for the right words, his usually guarded expression softening with a hint of vulnerability. Finally, he spoke quietly, “Lemon, I… I didn’t realize you felt this way. You’ve always been so bright and honest. I’ve admired that about you.”

Her heart skipped a beat. “Really?”

He nodded, a faint smile touching his lips. “Yes. I’ve always appreciated your kindness and your warmth. Maybe I’ve been slow to see it, but I think I feel the same way.”

Relief flooded Lemon’s chest like a tidal wave. Her smile widened, her eyes shimmering with happiness. “So… you do?”

Lucien hesitated, then reached out and gently took her hand. His touch was tentative but sincere. “Yes. I think I do.”

A rush of joy made Lemon’s cheeks glow even more. Her fingers intertwined with his, a perfect fit. She felt her worries melt away, replaced by a new sense of hope. For the first time, she saw a glimpse of the boy behind the icy exterior—someone who genuinely cared and was willing to open his heart.

Suddenly, the classroom door swung open, and Ethan’s head popped in, grinning mischievously. “Well, well, looks like I walked in on something good,” he teased, winking. “Guess I’m not the only ones feeling a little warm today.”

Lemon giggled, pulling her hand back shyly. Lucien shot a quick glare at Ethan but didn’t release his grip. Instead, he said softly, “Thanks, Ethan. I think Lemon and I are going to talk for a bit.”

Ethan chuckled, raising his hands in mock surrender. “Alright, alright. I’ll leave you two lovebirds alone. Just don’t forget I was here when you’re famous for your epic love story.”

Once Ethan left, Lemon turned to Lucien, her heart pounding anew. “I was so nervous to tell you. I didn’t want to ruin what we have, but I couldn’t keep it inside anymore.”

Lucien looked into her eyes, his expression earnest. “Lemon, I think we’re just beginning. There’s so much more I want to discover about you, about us. I want to be honest and open from now on.”

She nodded, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. “Me too. I believe this is the start of something really special.”

As they sat together in the quiet classroom, Lemon realized that sometimes, taking a chance was the bravest thing of all. With Lucien’s hand gently holding hers, she felt a new chapter unfolding—one filled with hope, understanding, and the promise of love that bloomed quietly but surely, like a strawberry flower reaching toward the sun.
