The Library Book Surprise
The warm afternoon sun cast a gentle glow over the school courtyard as Lemon hurried across the pavement, clutching a small wrapped package close to her chest. Her cheeks flushed with anticipation, her heart pounding with a mixture of nervousness and hope. Today was the day she had been planning for weeks—an opportunity to finally tell Lucien how she felt. She knew he was busy with studies, but she also knew that sometimes, the right moment arrived when least expected.
As she approached the familiar oak tree where they often met during breaks, Lemon spotted Lucien sitting alone, his nose buried in a thick book. His sharp features were illuminated by the sunlight filtering through the leaves, giving him an almost ethereal presence. She hesitated for a moment, taking a deep breath to steady her nerves. Then, gathering all her courage, she stepped forward.
"Hey, Lucien," she called softly, her voice trembling just a little. He looked up, eyes narrowing slightly as he recognized her, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
"Hello, Lemon," he replied, closing his book and setting it aside. His voice was calm, but she could detect a hint of curiosity—perhaps surprise—that she was approaching him so directly.
"I brought you something," she managed, holding out the small package. "It's... for you."
Lucien's eyebrows lifted in mild surprise. He reached out and carefully took the package, unfolding the wrapping to reveal a neatly made strawberry-shaped plush, soft and vibrant, with tiny embroidered seeds and a cute little leaf at the top. It was simple, yet crafted with care. Lemon watched anxiously as he examined it, her heart fluttering.
"It's a little gift," she said shyly. "Because... I wanted to say thank you for everything. And, um, I hope you like it."
Lucien's expression softened, and he looked up at her with those piercing eyes, now tinged with something unfamiliar—appreciation, perhaps, or gentle curiosity. He held the plush in his hands, turning it over thoughtfully.
"It's very... thoughtful," he said quietly. Then, after a moment of silence, he looked at her directly. "Lemon, I appreciate this. And I appreciate your kindness. You're always so cheerful and genuine—that's rare."
Lemon's cheeks warmed at his words, and she felt a flutter in her stomach. She had been worried that her feelings might be too obvious, too forward, but hearing him speak so sincerely made her confidence grow just a little.
"I... I just want you to know how much you mean to me," she blurted out, her voice trembling again. "Ever since we met, I felt like I could be myself around you. You make everything brighter."
Lucien looked at her, a flicker of something deeper crossing his face—perhaps realization or a budding affection. He hesitated, then reached out and gently took her hand in his, his touch tentative but warm.
"Lemon," he said softly, "I’ve been... trying to understand these feelings I’ve had lately. It’s unfamiliar territory for me, but I think I’m starting to realize what they might be."
Her heart skipped a beat. Encouraged, she squeezed his hand gently, her eyes shining with hope.
"I’ve liked you for a while now," she admitted, voice barely above a whisper. "I was scared to say anything at first, but I couldn't keep it inside anymore. I want to be honest with you, because I believe in us."
Lucien’s gaze lingered on her face, studying her expression as if searching for any sign of doubt or hesitation. Finding none, he finally nodded slowly, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips.
"Thank you for trusting me with your feelings," he said. "It takes courage to be honest like that. I think... I feel the same way."
A burst of joy surged through Lemon, and she couldn’t help but smile brightly. Her entire body felt lighter, as if a weight she hadn’t realized she’d been carrying had been lifted. She looked at him, her heart swelling with happiness.
Together, they sat in silence for a moment, the warmth of the sun and the gentle rustling of leaves around them creating a peaceful backdrop. Lemon felt a newfound confidence blossoming within her, and she knew that this was only the beginning of something beautiful.
Lucien broke the silence with a soft chuckle. "You know, I never thought I’d find myself here, like this—sharing my feelings. It’s strange but... also wonderful."
Lemon giggled, her cheeks flushed. "Me neither. But I’m glad I took the chance."
Their fingers still intertwined, they looked out over the courtyard, feeling a quiet sense of promise in the air. For Lemon, every moment leading up to this had been filled with nervous anticipation, but in this instant, everything felt just right. And for Lucien, the icy exterior he had once kept so carefully guarded was slowly melting away, revealing a heart that was beginning to open, eager to embrace the warmth Lemon had brought into his world.
As they sat there, the school bell rang faintly in the distance, but neither of them moved. Instead, they simply stayed, enjoying the glow of their shared newfound understanding, ready to face whatever came next—together.
