Chapter 21

The First Study Session

Lemon’s heart fluttered as she clutched the small, wrapped box tightly in her hands. The courtyard buzzed with the lively chatter of students, but her focus was solely on the faint, steady thrum of anticipation pounding in her chest. Today was the day she had decided to confess her feelings to Lucien, and though her nerves threatened to overwhelm her, her determination remained steadfast.

She took a deep breath, glancing around to ensure no prying eyes. Her best friend Mia was nearby, her bright eyes sparkling with curiosity and encouragement. Mia had been a constant source of cheer, always pushing Lemon to be brave and true to herself. With a quick, reassuring smile, Lemon nodded and stepped forward, weaving her way through the clusters of students until she reached Lucien, who was engrossed in his books under the shade of a tall tree.

Lucien looked up as Lemon approached, a faint flicker of surprise crossing his normally composed face. His sharp eyes softened when he saw her, and a hint of curiosity drew him closer. Lemon’s palms were clammy, but she steadied herself, holding out the small box.

“I… I got something for you,” she stammered, cheeks flushing. Her voice was tentative, but her eyes shone with sincerity.

Lucien reached out, taking the package delicately, his gaze never leaving hers. He raised an eyebrow, a silent question.

“It's… just a little something,” Lemon said hurriedly, trying to keep her voice steady. “I wanted to give you this because… because I think you’re really special.”

A flicker of confusion crossed Lucien’s face, but he carefully unwrapped the paper to reveal a small, hand-painted notebook decorated with strawberries—her favorite motif. The cover was bright and cheerful, a stark contrast to Lucien’s usually reserved demeanor, yet somehow, it suited her perfectly.

Lucien looked at the gift, his expression unreadable for a moment. Then, slowly, he flipped open the cover, revealing pages filled with handwritten notes, sketches, and tiny doodles of strawberries. Lemon’s heart pounded harder; she had poured her feelings into that notebook, hoping he’d see the sincerity behind it.

“I thought… maybe you’d like it,” she said softly, her voice trembling with vulnerability. “It’s not much, but I wanted to share a part of myself with you.”

Lucien’s gaze lingered on the notebook, and a strange warmth seemed to seep into his usually icy exterior. He closed the cover gently and looked at Lemon, a faint, almost reluctant smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.

“Thank you,” he said quietly, voice almost a whisper. “This is… thoughtful.”

Lemon felt a surge of hope and joy, but she also knew she had to be brave enough to hear what came next. Gathering her courage, she took a step closer. “Lucien, I… I really like you. More than just a friend. I’ve wanted to tell you for a long time, but I was nervous. I understand if you don’t feel the same, but I needed to be honest.”

The words tumbled out faster than she could stop them, her cheeks burning with the intensity of her feelings. She looked down, afraid of his reaction but knowing she had to say it.

Lucien was silent for a moment, his eyes searching her face. The usually distant look in his eyes softened, and he gazed at her with an expression that was both contemplative and unexpectedly tender. Without a word, he reached out and gently took her hand, his fingertips brushing against hers.

“I never expected you to feel that way,” he said softly. “But I’m glad you told me. I’ve been… trying to understand what I feel around you. It’s unfamiliar, but not unwelcome.”

Lemon’s eyes widened, her heart pounding wildly. “Really?”

Lucien nodded slowly, a faint blush coloring his cheeks. “Yes. I think I’ve been trying to keep my distance because I was afraid of how much I’d start to care. But now, I realize that I want to see where this could go.”

A radiant smile broke across Lemon’s face, and she squeezed his hand gently. “I’ve been dreaming of this moment for so long,” she admitted, her voice thick with emotion. “I was scared it might never happen, but I’m so happy it did.”

Behind them, Mia watched from a distance, her grin impossibly wide. She silently cheered, glad to see Lemon’s courage paying off. Nearby, Ethan gave a discreet thumbs-up, his eyes shining with approval. Even Lily, Lemon’s younger sister, was watching with wide, admiring eyes, clutching her strawberry plushie as if it were a lucky charm.

Lucien’s smile grew more genuine as he looked at Lemon, his usual reserved demeanor melting away in the warmth of the moment. “I think I’d like to get to know you better,” he said softly. “And maybe… we can see where this leads us.”

Lemon nodded eagerly, her heart overflowing with happiness. As they stood there under the shade of the tree, the world seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them in their quiet, blossoming connection. The sun cast a gentle glow over everything, illuminating the start of a new chapter filled with hope, courage, and the promise of love.
