Chapter 26

A Little Competition

Lemon stood at the edge of the school courtyard, clutching her backpack tightly as the late afternoon sun cast warm amber hues across the grounds. The air was tinged with the faint scent of blooming cherry blossoms, their delicate petals fluttering softly in the gentle breeze. She took a deep breath, trying to steady her swirling thoughts. Today had felt like a whirlwind of emotions—hope, anxiety, and a flicker of courage she hadn’t known she possessed.

Mia appeared beside her, her eyes bright with excitement. “Lemon, are you ready? I’ve got everything prepared. Mr. Anderson said he’d be waiting near the fountain at three.”

Lemon nodded, forcing a small smile. Her heart pounded in her chest. She knew she couldn’t keep waiting forever, and today felt like the perfect moment to finally be honest with Lucien. The image of his cool, distant expression flickered in her mind, but she reminded herself that beneath that icy exterior was someone waiting to be understood.

As they approached the fountain, Lemon spotted Lucien sitting alone on a nearby bench, his head bent over a thick book. His sharp features were accentuated by the soft glow of the setting sun, and for a moment, Lemon hesitated. What if he didn’t feel the same? What if her feelings were just a fleeting crush?

Mia nudged her gently. “Go on, Lemon. You can do this. Just be yourself.”

Taking a deep breath, Lemon stepped forward. Her voice was steady but trembling slightly. “Lucien?”

He looked up, eyes narrowing slightly as he closed the book. His gaze met hers, cool yet curious. “Lemon. What’s wrong?”

She hesitated for a heartbeat, then pushed forward. “I… I wanted to tell you something. I’ve liked you for a while now, and I’ve been too nervous to say it. But I think it’s time I did.”

For a moment, Lucien’s eyes widened subtly, as if surprised by her confession. Then his expression softened just a fraction, though the usual aloofness remained. “Lemon, I… I appreciate your honesty. You’re quite different from everyone else I know.”

Her cheeks flushed, and she looked down briefly, feeling a mix of relief and vulnerability. “I just thought… maybe you’d understand. Even if you don’t feel the same, I wanted you to know how I feel.”

There was a pause, thick with unspoken words. Lucien shifted slightly on the bench, his expression contemplative. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, worn notebook. Flipping it open, he hesitated before speaking again.

“You’re brave,” he finally said, voice quiet but genuine. “I’ve always admired that about you, Lemon. Sometimes I don’t know how to express what I feel, but I do know that you’re special.”

Lemon’s heart fluttered at his words. She looked up to find him offering a tentative smile, a hint of warmth breaking through his usual reserved demeanor. It was small, but enough to make her feel like she was standing on solid ground.

Before she could respond, Mrs. Carter approached, her gentle smile radiating encouragement. “Lemon, Lucien, I’m glad I found you here. I wanted to remind you both of how important honesty and kindness are. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is simply be true to yourself.”

Lemon nodded, feeling a renewed sense of confidence. Mrs. Carter’s words echoed in her mind: honesty and kindness. She realized that her feelings, no matter the outcome, were worth sharing because they came from a genuine place.

Lucien closed his notebook carefully. “Mrs. Carter has a point. Lemon, I may not be the best at expressing myself, but I do want you to know that I respect you and… I care about you.”

The sincerity in his voice warmed her more than she expected. It wasn’t a declaration of love, perhaps, but it was honest and real. It felt like a step forward, a bridge between their worlds of words and silence.

The bell rang faintly in the distance, signaling the end of the school day, but in that moment, nothing else mattered. Lemon looked into Lucien’s eyes and saw, perhaps for the first time, a glimpse of the person beneath the icy veneer—a person capable of feeling deeply.

Mia grinned, leaning in to whisper, “See? You did it, Lemon. Just be yourself, and everything will fall into place.”

Lemon smiled back, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. The sky darkened gradually as stars began to twinkle faintly above, mirroring the sparks of hope ignited in her heart. She knew that this was only the beginning of something beautiful—a journey of understanding, patience, and the courage to love openly.

As they turned to leave, Lemon felt lighter, freer than she had in days. The world around her was still full of uncertainties, but she had taken a step forward, and that was enough. With Lucien walking beside her, she believed that, somehow, everything would be alright.
