Chapter 34

Shelter Under an Umbrella

Lemon sat quietly at her usual corner table in the school courtyard, her fingers absentmindedly tracing the edge of her strawberry-flavored lip balm. The sun was gentle today, casting a warm glow over the blooming cherry blossoms, their petals drifting lazily in the breeze. She watched them dance, her heart fluttering with a mixture of anticipation and nervousness. It had been a week since her conversation with Mrs. Carter, and she still felt the weight of her feelings pressing against her chest, unsure of what to do next.

Across the courtyard, Lucien was seated alone under the shade of a large tree, his books spread out before him. He was lost in thought, trying to focus on the equations in his notebook, but his mind kept drifting back to Lemon. Her bright smile, the way her eyes sparkled when she talked about her dreams—everything about her was etched into his memory. He knew he had changed since their paths had crossed, and though he tried to deny it, his feelings for her had grown deeper than he had ever expected.

A gentle voice broke through Lucien's concentration. "Hey, Lucien," Ethan called out, approaching with a teasing grin. "You look miles away. What's on your mind?" Ethan's eyes twinkled with mischief, but beneath his playful demeanor was genuine concern. He had noticed the subtle shift in Lucien’s attitude lately, the way his friend’s gaze lingered on Lemon whenever they crossed paths.

Lucien closed his notebook slowly, a faint blush creeping onto his cheeks. "Nothing," he murmured, avoiding Ethan’s gaze. "Just... thinking."

Ethan chuckled softly. "You’ve been like that a lot lately. I get it, man. Lemon’s got a way of doing that to people." His tone was friendly but pointed. "But you know, if you’re worried about messing things up, don’t be. Lemon’s the kind of person who can brighten anyone’s day with just a smile. You’ve got a shot."

Lucien looked down at his hands, hesitating before speaking. "I don’t know if I’m ready for that. It’s... complicated."

Ethan leaned against the tree trunk, crossing his arms. "Nothing’s ever simple when it comes to feelings, Lucien. But sometimes, the best thing you can do is just be honest. Lemon’s not one to shy away from sincerity. If you like her, tell her."

A sudden gust of wind swept a handful of cherry blossoms into the air, swirling around them like pink snow. Lucien watched them fall, the delicate petals reminding him of Lemon’s carefree spirit. Her laughter, her unwavering support—what if he ruined everything by saying the wrong thing? But in his heart, he knew that silence was its own kind of failure.

Meanwhile, Lemon’s gaze shifted to the school gates as she spotted Mia approaching. Her best friend’s energetic steps brought a bright smile to Lemon’s face. Mia plopped down beside her and immediately started chattering about the upcoming school festival, but Lemon’s thoughts lingered elsewhere.

“You seem distracted,” Mia observed, eyeing her friend carefully. “Are you okay?”

Lemon nodded, forcing a smile. “Just... thinking about things. Nothing to worry about.”

Mia grinned mischievously. “Uh-huh. I’ve known you long enough to know when something’s bothering you. Come on, Lemon. Spill.”

Lemon hesitated, then took a deep breath. “It’s about Lucien. I... I think I like him. A lot. But I’m scared. What if he doesn’t feel the same? Or what if I mess everything up?”

Mia’s eyes widened with surprise, then softened with understanding. “Lemon, that’s brave of you to admit. And honestly, I think Lucien’s the kind of guy who’s probably just as nervous as you are. You’re both kind and smart—maybe it’s just about taking that first step.”

Before Lemon could respond, Mrs. Carter approached, her gentle smile reassuring. “Lemon, I saw you from across the yard. You look like you’re holding a lot inside. Remember, honesty and kindness are always the best ways forward.”

Lemon nodded, feeling a renewed sense of courage bloom within her. Mrs. Carter’s words resonated, reminding her that genuine feelings often needed a little bravery to flourish.

As the afternoon sun dipped lower, casting longer shadows, Lemon gathered her resolve. She saw Lucien again under the same tree, his brow furrowed in thought. Without overthinking, she took a steadying breath and stepped closer.

“Lucien,” she called softly, her voice trembling slightly but steady. “Can I talk to you for a moment?”

He looked up, surprised by her sudden approach but nodded, gesturing for her to sit beside him. Lemon’s heart pounded in her chest as she searched for the right words.

“I just... I wanted to tell you that I really enjoy spending time with you,” she began, voice trembling but sincere. “You’re incredibly smart and kind, even if you don’t always show it. And I think I’ve started to like you—more than just a friend.”

Lucien’s eyes widened, and he looked down, his cheeks flushing. For a moment, he said nothing, overwhelmed by her honesty. Then, slowly, he reached out and took her hand gently.

“I’ve felt the same way,” he admitted quietly. “I’ve been trying to find the right words, but I guess I’ve been afraid I’d ruin everything. Lemon, you’re the most genuine person I’ve ever met. I want to get to know you better.”

A soft smile broke across Lemon’s face, her worries melting away like snow in spring. The cherry blossoms continued to fall around them, symbols of new beginnings. In that quiet moment, amid the pink petals and the warmth of the setting sun, they both understood that honesty, courage, and a little bit of vulnerability had opened the door to something truly special.
