A Coffee Break
Lemon’s heart fluttered as she approached the school courtyard, clutching the small box wrapped in a delicate pink ribbon. Today felt different—more significant than any other day. Her cheeks warmed at the thought of finally sharing her feelings with Lucien. She took a deep breath, smoothing her skirt nervously, and scanned the area for him.
Lucien was already there, standing by the fountain with an unreadable expression, his dark eyes fixed on the water's surface. He seemed lost in thought, the usual cold detachment softened by an almost wistful look. Lemon’s nerves fluttered anew, but she steadied herself and stepped forward.
“Hey, Lucien,” she greeted softly, trying to keep her voice steady. Her voice barely above a whisper, yet it carried across the gentle hum of students passing by. She held out the small box, eyes shining with a mixture of hope and anticipation. “I brought you something.”
He turned slowly, eyebrows raised ever so slightly in curiosity. His gaze fixed on the gift, then on her, as if trying to decipher her intentions. Lemon felt her pulse quicken, but she pressed on.
“It’s just a little something,” she said, her cheeks flushing. “I thought maybe you’d like it.” She offered the box, her fingers trembling slightly.
Lucien hesitated, then reached out to take it, his fingertips brushing hers briefly. Carefully, he unwrapped the ribbon and lifted the lid. Inside was a small, handcrafted bookmark shaped like a star, decorated with tiny, shimmering stones that caught the sunlight. It was simple but meaningful—a token of her admiration and affection.
He looked at it silently, then at Lemon. His expression was unreadable for a moment, as if weighing his feelings. Finally, he spoke, his voice low but steady. “Thank you. It’s... beautiful.”
Lemon’s heart skipped a beat. “I’m glad you like it,” she whispered, feeling a surge of courage. “I wanted to tell you something. I’ve been wanting to say it for a while now.”
Lucien’s gaze softened just a fraction, enough for Lemon to notice. For a moment, she wondered if he felt the same, if her words had reached him. She took a step closer, gathering her courage.
“I like you, Lucien,” she admitted, the words tumbling out before she could second-guess herself. “More than just as a friend. I know you’re probably surprised, but I’ve liked you for a long time. Your kindness, your intelligence—everything about you. I just wanted you to know.”
For a long pause, Lucien said nothing. His eyes searched hers, as if trying to find the truth in her confession. Then, slowly, a flicker of warmth appeared in his gaze. He reached out, gently placing a hand on her shoulder.
“You’re brave,” he said softly, his voice tinged with a hint of emotion Lemon had never heard before. “I’ve noticed how you always see the good in everything, even in me. I’ve been... thinking about you a lot lately. About how your bright spirit has started to melt the ice around my heart.”
Lemon’s cheeks flushed again, but she managed a small, hopeful smile. “Really?”
He nodded, a faint smile tugging at his lips. “Yes. I’ve been trying to understand my feelings, and I think... I think I like you too, Lemon.”
Relief and happiness flooded her chest, and she felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes. “I’m so happy to hear that,” she whispered, stepping closer to him. “I’ve wanted to tell you for so long, but I was afraid I might ruin everything.”
Lucien’s eyes softened further, and he gently took her hand in his. “You haven’t ruined anything. If anything, you’ve helped me see that there’s more to life than just studying and being aloof. You’ve shown me the beauty of kindness, of being vulnerable.”
The moment was suddenly interrupted by the cheerful voice of Mia, who appeared a few steps away, waving excitedly. “Lemon! Lucien! I saw you two from across the yard. Oh my gosh, this is so adorable!”
Lemon turned, blushing furiously, while Lucien looked mildly annoyed but also amused. Mia skipped over, her eyes sparkling.
“Wow, Lemon, I had a feeling you’d finally tell him! And Lucien, I never thought I’d see you blush, but here we are.” She grinned mischievously. “You guys are so cute together.”
Lucien shook his head with a faint smile, his usual composure breaking just a little. “Mia, give us a moment, please.”
Mia giggled, stepping back. “Of course! I just wanted to say I’m happy for you both. You deserve happiness.” She winked before bounding away, leaving Lemon and Lucien alone once more.
Lemon looked up at him, her heart pounding with a mixture of exhilaration and nervousness. “So… what now?”
Lucien’s gaze was gentle, almost tender. “Now, I think we see where this goes. I don’t want to hide how I feel anymore.” His fingers brushed her cheek softly, and Lemon felt her face heat up again.
They stood there in silence, the sound of the fountain and distant laughter surrounding them. For the first time, Lemon felt that her courage had truly paid off—her feelings acknowledged, her heart finally open. And as Lucien leaned in just a little closer, she knew that this was only the beginning of something new and beautiful.
