Chapter 54

The First Date Plan

Lemon’s heart fluttered as she stepped into the quiet corner of the school courtyard, clutching her small backpack close to her chest. The late afternoon sun cast a warm, golden hue over the blooming cherry blossoms, their petals drifting lazily in the gentle breeze. Today was the day she had been nervously anticipating—an opportunity to finally share her feelings with Lucien, away from the crowded hallways and prying eyes.

She took a deep breath, trying to steady her pounding heart. Her cheeks warmed beneath her light makeup, and she pushed aside her swirling doubts. This was her moment, her chance to be brave. She glanced around, spotting him sitting alone under the shade of a large tree, engrossed in a thick book about ancient history. His dark hair was slightly tousled, and his sharp features seemed almost softer in the glow of the setting sun.

Lemon’s steps were hesitant at first, but her resolve grew stronger with each one. She approached quietly, her footsteps muffled by the soft grass beneath her sneakers. As she drew closer, her mind raced through all the words she had rehearsed—her hopes, her fears, her desire to make him see how much he meant to her.

Lucien looked up, his piercing eyes meeting hers as she hesitated beside him. A brief flicker of surprise crossed his face, but it was quickly replaced by a calm, unreadable expression. Lemon’s palms were sweaty, but she forced herself to speak.

"Hi, Lucien," she began, voice trembling just slightly. "I… I’ve been wanting to tell you something for a while now."

He closed his book slowly, setting it aside as he turned to face her fully. His expression remained composed, but Lemon detected a flicker of curiosity in his gaze. Her heart pounded fiercely in her chest, yet she pressed on, determined not to back down.

"I really enjoy spending time with you," she admitted softly, a blush creeping up her cheeks. "You’re so smart and kind, even if you don’t always show it. And… I think I’ve started to like you more than just as a friend."

There was a silence that stretched between them, filled only by the distant chirping of birds and the rustling leaves. Lemon’s eyes widened slightly at her own words, worried they might be too bold or unwelcome. But Lucien’s face remained still, his eyes studying her with an intensity that made her feel both exposed and hopeful.

He finally reached out, gently taking her hand in his. His touch was cool but reassuring. "Lemon," he said quietly, his voice steady but with a hint of softness she hadn’t heard before. "I’ve noticed how you always brighten the days around you, how your laughter is like sunshine on cloudy mornings. Honestly, I’ve been… trying to understand what it is I feel when I’m around you."

Her breath hitched, her cheeks burning brighter. She hadn’t expected him to be so open, so vulnerable. It was as if a barrier she hadn’t even realized was there had suddenly dissolved, revealing a deeper layer of emotion beneath his usual cool exterior.

Lucien hesitated for a moment, then continued, "You make me want to change, Lemon. To be more than just the person who keeps everyone at arm’s length. I’ve never been good at expressing these feelings, but I know now that I want to try—to see where this could go."

A tear of happiness welled in Lemon’s eye, and she nodded eagerly. "I’ve wanted to hear you say that," she whispered, her voice trembling with relief and joy. "I was so nervous, but I thought… maybe you felt the same."

He squeezed her hand gently, a shy smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "Maybe I do," Lucien admitted, his eyes shining with a rare warmth. "And I want to find out what that means—together."

In that moment, the world seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them under the shade of the cherry blossom tree. Lemon felt her heart swell with hope, her worries dissolving into the soft glow of sunset and the promise of new beginnings. She leaned slightly closer, her smile luminous and genuine, ready to embrace whatever future awaited them—together.
