Chapter 72

The Sweetest Apology

Lemon sat quietly on the school courtyard bench, her fingers absently tracing the edge of her notebook. The afternoon sun cast a warm glow over the blossoming trees, their petals fluttering gently in the breeze. She had come here to clear her mind, to gather her courage, but her heart still fluttered with uncertainty. Today had been a whirlwind—so many moments crammed into a few hours, leaving her feeling both exhilarated and nervous.

Across the courtyard, Lucien approached with his usual composed demeanor, his dark eyes fixed on her with an intensity that made her cheeks flush. He hesitated for a moment, then sat down beside her, the silence stretching comfortably between them. Lemon looked down at her hands, fidgeting with the hem of her sleeve, unsure of how to start.

Lucien broke the silence with a gentle voice. "You've been quieter than usual today. Something on your mind?"

Lemon hesitated, then nodded, her cheeks warming. "It's just… I’ve been thinking about everything that’s happened recently. About us, I guess."

He tilted his head slightly, studying her with a curious but soft expression. "And what have you decided?"

She took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts. "I guess I just want to be honest. I like you, Lucien. More than just a classmate or a friend. I’ve felt it for a while now, but I was afraid to say anything because I didn't want to ruin what we have."

Lucien's eyes widened slightly in surprise, but he quickly masked it with a calm smile. He looked away for a moment, as if weighing his words carefully. "Lemon, I’ve always admired your strength and kindness. I’ve noticed how you brighten up the room with your laughter—that’s one of the reasons I was drawn to you."

Her heart fluttered at his words. She felt a spark of hope ignite inside her, but she also sensed a certain hesitation in him. She reached out, her hand trembling slightly, and gently clasped his. "Is it okay? If I like you?"

Lucien looked back into her eyes, a faint blush creeping onto his cheeks. "It’s more than okay. I’ve been… trying to understand my feelings. I’ve never been good at expressing them, but with you, everything feels different."

They sat in silence for a moment, the only sound the rustling leaves and distant chatter of students. Lemon felt her confidence grow, buoyed by the warmth of his words. She had been so afraid of rejection, but now, with Lucien’s honesty, a new sense of possibility blossomed within her.

Suddenly, Lucien reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, neatly wrapped package. His fingers brushed hers briefly as he handed it to her. "I wanted to give you this. It’s just a small token, but I hope it shows how much I care."

Lemon’s eyes sparkled as she carefully unwrapped the gift. Inside was a delicate bracelet adorned with tiny strawberries, the fruit crafted from tiny red and green beads. Her lips curled into a wide smile. "It’s beautiful! Thank you."

Lucien looked at her, a hint of a shy smile tugging at his lips. "I thought it suited you. And… I hope we can continue to get to know each other better."

She nodded eagerly, her cheeks still tinged with blush. "I’d like that very much."

As the sun dipped lower, casting long shadows across the courtyard, Lemon leaned her head on Lucien’s shoulder, feeling a newfound warmth spread through her. For the first time, she sensed that their connection was real and growing stronger. The doubts that had haunted her before seemed distant now, replaced by a quiet confidence that love, no matter how uncertain it begins, can blossom with patience and honesty.

Behind them, the school bell rang, signaling the end of the day. Students hurried past, but Lemon and Lucien remained seated, savoring this quiet moment of closeness. The world around them was busy, chaotic even, but in their small corner of the courtyard, time seemed to slow just enough for two hearts to understand each other better.

Lucien looked down at her, eyes soft and full of unspoken promises. "Lemon, I want to be honest with you. I’ve never felt like this before. It’s new and a little frightening, but I don’t want to let go of what we’re starting."

She squeezed his hand gently, feeling a surge of courage. "Neither do I. I believe in us."

In that moment, they both knew that their journey was only beginning. There would be hurdles ahead, moments of doubt and uncertainty, but for now, they had each other. That was enough to give them hope—hope that love, no matter how shy and tentative at first, could grow into something beautiful.
