Chapter 86

The Farewell Gift

Lemon shaded her eyes against the bright afternoon sun, squinting as she watched Lucien from a distance. He stood beneath a sprawling oak tree, clutching a thick book to his chest, his usual expression of calm focus replaced by a faint hint of agitation. The air buzzed with an unspoken tension, and Lemon’s heart fluttered with anticipation. Today felt different—more significant somehow.

She took a tentative step forward, hesitant but determined. Her heart pounded in her chest, each beat echoing the nervous excitement that had been building for days. She had rehearsed countless times what she wanted to say, but now, faced with the reality of him so close, her words seemed to evaporate, leaving only a warm, trembling feeling in her stomach.

Lucien looked up suddenly, as if sensing her presence. His eyes met hers briefly, and for a moment, she wondered if he could read her mind. His expression was guarded, the usual icy veneer intact, yet beneath it, she sensed a flicker of something more genuine—perhaps curiosity or even surprise.

Gathering her courage, Lemon stepped closer, her cheeks flushed. "Hey, Lucien," she called softly, her voice trembling just enough to betray her nervousness. He looked at her, eyebrows raised slightly, waiting. She took a deep breath, her voice steadier now. "I’ve been thinking… about us."

He tilted his head, studying her with that quiet intensity that always made her feel both intimidated and exhilarated. "What about us?" he asked, his tone neutral but with an underlying curiosity.

Lemon fidgeted with the strap of her bag, trying to find the right words. "I just… I want you to know that I really enjoy spending time with you. And I think… I think I like you." The words spilled out in a rush, her cheeks burning with embarrassment.

For a moment, Lucien’s face was unreadable. Then, he lowered the book slightly, his eyes searching hers. "Lemon, you’re always so cheerful and full of energy. But why now? Why tell me this today?"

She hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. "Because I’ve realized something. I don’t want to keep my feelings hidden anymore. You've always been so distant, so focused on everything around you, but I see beneath that. I see the real you, and I like him."

A faint smile touched Lucien’s lips, subtle but genuine. "You’re brave to say that," he murmured. His voice was softer than usual, a rare warmth slipping through. "I’ve noticed you, too. Your brightness, your kindness. It’s… contagious."

Lemon’s heart skipped a beat. She reached out tentatively, her fingers brushing against his sleeve. "So… what do you think? About us?"

He looked away momentarily, the usual cool exterior flickering with something more vulnerable. Then, he met her gaze again, eyes steady and sincere. "I think I’d like to get to know you better. Maybe… see where this could go."

Relief flooded Lemon’s chest, her smile widening. She felt a surge of happiness that made her want to jump in place. "Really?" she asked, nearly breathless.

Lucien nodded, a hint of a blush touching his cheeks now. "Really."

They stood in silence for a moment, the world around them fading into the background. Lemon felt a newfound confidence swell within her, as if a barrier she hadn’t realized was there had finally fallen away. She reached out and took his hand gently, feeling the warmth of his skin beneath her fingertips.

Lucien looked down at their intertwined hands, then back at her, his expression softening further. "You know," he said quietly, "I’ve always admired your ability to see beyond the surface. Maybe I’ve been too focused on my own world to notice what’s right in front of me."

Lemon giggled softly, her heart fluttering again. "Well, I’m glad you’re finally noticing."

He leaned a little closer, his voice barely above a whisper. "There’s still a lot I need to understand about myself and about us, but I want to try."

She nodded eagerly, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. "Me too."

As they stood together beneath the ancient oak, the sun cast a golden glow around them, illuminating the beginning of something new—a fragile yet promising connection that had taken root in the quiet confidence of two hearts daring to beat in harmony. Lemon knew there would be challenges ahead, uncertainties to face, but in this moment, all she could feel was hope—hope that love, in all its messy, beautiful complexity, was finally within reach.
